Ornate Saxon copper disc brooch decorated with gold and garnets, AD 650-670. It must have been a treasured possession! From Floral Street, Covent Garden, once the heart of ‘Lundenwic’, the early Saxon town of London. Museum of London 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a circular Saxon brooch made of copper, the front of which is ornately embellished with gold and garnets. There are five raised, circular, gold bosses which are outlined with inlaid garnet slabs, and each set with a central, round garnet. Four of the gold bosses are arranged around a fifth, larger, gold boss in the centre of the brooch. The central boss sits within a star-like, four-pointed geometric shape composed of a mosaic of inlaid garnet slabs. The outer edge of the brooch is decorated with two rows of tiny inlaid polished garnets. The eight gold sections at either side of the four smaller bosses are decorated with raised gold filigree which looks like looped, braided cord. Parts of the brooch are worn, with some chipped edges, and missing garnet stones. The brooch measures approximately 7 cm in diameter. It is displayed on a clear glass surface. It was excavated from a woman's grave by AOC Archaeology in 2000 ahead of development construction works. This type of brooch was a fashionable status piece amongst wealthy aristocratic Anglo-Saxon women in the AD 600s. The woman's grave also contained glass beads and silver rings.

#FindsFriday 🏺 Superb bronze chimera: likely emblem (episema) on C6 BC warrior's shield w lion's head on flame-like mane + scaly fierce snake striking from centre. From high status tomb w arms, tools, ceramics + iron wheels of chariot excavated in Melfi, Basilicata. Melfi Nat Archaeological Museum.
A large thin bronze decoration probably displayed on a 6th C BC warrior's shield. At the top the head of a beast with a stylised lion's head and snout, on a long neck with incised flame-like mane, emerges from a scaly circle. This serves as the body of a fierce snake (which probably wrapped round the lion's body), which extends to the top right with a long head and open mouth, with wing below lower jaw.
The culture in Melfi at the time was in flux, with native Daunian cultures interacting with Lucanians from the north.

Prague’s Lennon Wall began as a symbol of resistance to Communist rule and remains a canvas for freedom & political expression. One section caught my eye: Czechs depicted as a cow caught between East and West — Putin pulling the tail, Trump milking the cow, all against the colors of the Czech flag.

“Tranquillity is courage in repose.” Inazo Nitobe. This striking tableau embodies the famous sentiment from Inazo Nitobe's landmark 1900 text, Bushido: The Soul of Japan, where true valor is defined not by frantic aggression, but by unshakeable inner composure.
Set against a striking, seamless field of deep crimson, a warrior clad in full samurai armor (yoroi) kneels in a poised, immovable posture. His jet-black lacquered helmet (kabuto) is crowned with dramatic stag antlers (wakidate) flanking a gilded crescent moon (maedate), while a dark facial mask (menpō) conceals his features behind a stoic, iron gaze. Over a rich navy undergarment and patterned brocade trousers, overlapping plates of black lacquered iron are bound together by tight rows of vermilion and dark silk lacing (odoshi). In his right hand, he grips a long sword wrapped in striking black-and-white hilt cords (tsuka-ito), while his left hand rests grounded upon his thigh near his sidearm (wakizashi). The composition radiates a profound sensory atmosphere: the heavy, cold density of lacquered steel, the crisp tension of hand-strung silk cords, the faint aroma of clove oil and seasoned leather, and the electric, quiet stillness that precedes a decisive motion.
The antlers and crescent moon crest recall the iconic battlefield armors of legendary Sengoku-period warlords like Sanada Yukimura and Honda Tadakatsu, whose protective gear served as both psychological intimidate and a bold personal statement of identity. Japanese armor design represents a pinnacle of monozukuri (artisanal mastery), harmonizing metalwork, leathercraft, lacquerware, and textile arts into a flexible, highly engineered suit of mobile protection. Beyond physical defense, the warrior’s grounded posture reflects fudōshin—the "immovable mind" cultivated through zen and martial discipline, where spiritual tranquillity is understood as the ultimate reservoir of strength.

October is the 10th month. ‘October’ means “8th month.” In the first calendar used in ancient Rome, the year had only ten months, starting in March and ending in December. The extra period between December and March was not considered part of the series of months.
