Been in London so long I’m probably a Dublindoner. Almost an architect - Groucho Marx rule and all that. Late career move into LA planning. Deffo fat lad at the back. Views my own.

RTÉ News: Israel declare 'football has won' after Irish squad vote www.rte.ie/sport/soccer... Shambolic failure of principle by the FAI and the Irish team gives the cynical IFA a PR victory. FAI and UEFA should have prevented this and shielded the team but they they are adults with moral agency.

The case for climate realism in an age of soaring energy demand
The conventional narrative assumes economies can grow while using less energy. The opposite is happening. It is time for climate realism.

I haven’t timed it but it looks like BBC news coverage of air traffic control failure is greater than For Sec’s criticism of Israel’s egregiously illegal behaviour in the West Bank.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.

I did phone-based broadband support for about eight years. The best/worst call saw me ask someone to "close all their windows and return to the desktop." After a couple of minutes, the customer said: "They're all closed, but the kitchen window is still open. Is that okay?" Yeah.

Another friendly little disagreement, but the notion politicians couldn’t fix Thatcherism after 36 is a rather damming indictment on them. 36 years to re industrialise, to build council houses, to deal with an aging population. They all failed.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

The Home Office won’t know what it had til its gone. Rightly or wrongly, lawyers are schooled and trained to dissociate themselves from the outcome of the cases they work on. It is, shall we say, partially effective. Judges are former lawyers and carry that through.

I’m not usually one for conspiracy theories but two matches today and questionable (outrageous in Iran’s case) VAR decisions have had no or delayed 3D images. Is this because they need time to doctor them to support the decision?
