A coalition of progressive city prosecutors known as FAFO vows to prosecute rogue federal law enforcement. (gift link) www.nytimes.com/2026/01/27/u...
Screenshot from a NY Times article:
"Nine progressive prosecutors from cities around the country are launching a coalition to assist in prosecuting federal law enforcement officers who violate state laws, one of the prosecutors, Larry Krasner in Philadelphia, said on Tuesday.

The organization, which is called the Project for the Fight Against Federal Overreach, will also include Mary Moriarty, the elected prosecutor in Minneapolis. Its acronym, F.A.F.O., references a slang term for negative consequences, and its formation was spurred by “growing concerns about warrantless entries, unlawful detentions, and coercive enforcement tactics by federal agents,” according to a news release."

An important reminder as breaking news stories unfold newslit.org/wp-content/u...
Infographic titled "Breaking news checklist"

What to do when information is scarce, falsehoods are rampant and the story is still unfolding

1. Mind the gap - WHEN BIG NEWS BREAKS, EVERYONE WANTS THE DETAILS, but verified information can be tough to find. BE MINDFUL that a deluge of unconfirmed, misleading and completely bogus content often rushes in to fill the gap between what’s available and what the public wants to know.

2. Beware bad actors - BAD ACTORS NEED ATTENTION TO THRIVE, so they often capitalize on breaking news situations to spread sensationalized or false content for cheap likes and shares. In times of war, natural disasters and upheaval, misinformation also acts as a tool to advance certain narratives and shape public opinion. DON’T BE EXPLOITED. Slow down and resist the urge to share unconfirmed claims or visuals.

3. Do a quick search - A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH IS OFTEN THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST MISINFORMATION. Hop off social media and do a simple search to investigate unsubstantiated claims and unfamiliar sources. BEWARE of shocking news updates circulating among ordinary social media users but not in news coverage. Credible news sources will cover major updates.

4. Look for evidence - CLAIMS THAT MAKE BOLD ASSERTIONS BUT PROVIDE NO LINKS OR OTHER EVIDENCE should always be APPROACHED WITH CAUTION, especially screenshots. If a social media post does include an outside link — to a news report, study or some other source — make sure the link actually supports claims in the original post.

5. Seek credible sources - IT’S IMPORTANT TO ACTIVELY SEEK OUT NEWS FROM CREDIBLE SOURCES and not rely on social media algorithms to bring you updates. BE INTENTIONAL about following professional journalists on the ground.

6. Practice patience - QUALITY JOURNALISM AND VERIFICATION TAKE TIME. It might take days or even weeks to untangle initial accounts or investigate claims involving a major story.

The proper political use of the Epstein files is not to insist that everything is a distraction from them but rather to use their salience to cast doubt on everything the government says. “The government is withholding 90% of those files - illegally. You trust them on Venezuela? On Minneapolis?”

Thinking about this article in the NYT from January when they tried to tell us that resistance was not going to be a thing in Trump's second term www.nytimes.com/2025/01/19/u...
Screenshot that reads: "Lehigh Valley ROAR was one of more than 2,000 similar grass-roots groups formed in the wake of Mr. Trump’s first election — a moment of mass organization larger than even the Tea Party movement at its peak during President Barack Obama’s first term, said Theda Skocpol, a Harvard University professor of government and sociology who has studied both movements.

A vast majority of the groups were led by women, and many traced a similar arc to Ms. Morganelli’s, their shock at Mr. Trump’s election sparking political activism and then, often, electoral victories.

But then there was the defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

[highlighted] As Mr. Trump returns to the White House on Monday with a popular vote victory and a governing trifecta in Washington, there are few signs of the sort of mass public protest that birthed “the resistance” the last time he took office."

And yet the same poll has the 2026 generic congressional ballot at D+3, so that high disapproval is coming entirely from partisan Democrats themselves. If you've ever wanted to challenge an ineffective Democratic incumbent, you're not going to have a better opportunity than next year.

The NY Times fucked up this chart. My takeway is that it is still mind-blowing.
CORRECTED chart from the NY Times showing the age distribution of NYC voters in the Democratic mayoral primary. About 75 thousand people aged 18 to 24 voted in the 2025 primary, compared to less than 50 thousand in 2021. The age groups with the most voters are those aged 25 to 29 and 30 to 34, with both groups topping 100 thousand voters, a large increase from 2021.

Chart of the age distribution of voters in the NYC mayoral primary, 2025 vs. 2021. The chart shows a significant increase in voters under 35 years old from 2021 to 2025. Over 100 thousand voters aged 18 to 24 voted in the 2025 democratic primary compared to less than 50 thousand in 2021. Voters aged 18 to 24 comprise the largest age group of voters in 2025, followed by voters 25 to 29 (also over 100 thousand) and voters aged 30 to 34 (almost 100 thousand).
