So-called AI is an enormous societal problem for all kinds of reasons, but no computer program is super-intelligent or intelligent. Marking out a particular type of algorithmic approach in this way is counter-productive. It lets equally harmful approaches to automated decision making off the hook.

Anyway, no real conclusion, just some thoughts. I'd recommend 2 out of the 3 (yes Yesteryear is probably the best; my other rec would be the Trad Wife by Sarah Langan). I hope the next batch of these take a bit more time to come out so everyone can think about this more, idk.

It feels like there's an underlying panic too, and lack of understanding, and unwillingness to be as vulnerably empathetic as you need to be when writing fiction if you're going to create whole characters. Each novel felt like it was chafing at not being a long-form investigative article instead.

None of the 3 novels have, imo, managed to tell their stories without being just a liiiiiitle bit sardonic. As a ~progressive reader, I've felt like I'm being reassured all the time that I'm much smarter than the characters.

I've read 3 novels about trad wives so far this year (2 out of the 3 literally just called Trad Wife lol) and it's a very weird, uneven sub-genre. I feel like I understand the horror/fascination but perhaps that's not the best perspective to write fiction from.
