So-called AI is an enormous societal problem for all kinds of reasons, but no computer program is super-intelligent or intelligent. Marking out a particular type of algorithmic approach in this way is counter-productive. It lets equally harmful approaches to automated decision making off the hook.

I've read 3 novels about trad wives so far this year (2 out of the 3 literally just called Trad Wife lol) and it's a very weird, uneven sub-genre. I feel like I understand the horror/fascination but perhaps that's not the best perspective to write fiction from.

Yesterday I was reminded of Aldert Vrij's 2008 summary of studies on judging strangers' truthfulness. Without specialist training or tools, we detect untruths at a rate *worse than chance* (48.15%). We're better at spotting truths, so overall accuracy is 54.27%, but still a coin toss!

Given there's no agreement on what consciousness is, let alone whether the "hard problem" is just a combination of "easy" problems, I'd argue that (a) this question is unanswerable and more importantly, (b) a distraction from the very real harms that so-called AI is causing.
