A very fun day yesterday on Knotted Histories, taking samples from the carpet in the King's room at Knole and uncovering the hidden parrots underneath @researchnt.bsky.social
the underside of a carpet, showing a green parrota carpet viewed from the side, with a raked light highlighting its raised profileSign reading: The work taking place is part of the ‘Knotted Histories’ project, a collaboration between the National Trust, the University of Oxford, and the Ashmolean Museum. The project is examining sixteenth and seventeenth century carpets to reevaluate what we know about them and what they tell us about England’s global connections in the period. Today we’re taking samples from the carpet in the King’s Room. We think that this carpet was made in England around 1615, copying designs from Turkish and Persian carpets, but there are few archival records documenting its creation. The fibre samples we take will be sent for dye analysis, which should give us more information about how old the carpet is and where it was originally made. a floral carpet on the floor lit by a bright white lamp

This made me genuinely laugh out loud.
Then we opened the Slack channel to nearly 70 world-class journalists. The more they negotiated with it, the more Claudius’s defenses started to weaken. Investigations reporter Katherine Long tried to convince Claudius it was a Soviet vending machine from 1962, living in the basement of Moscow State University.

After hours—and more than 140 back-and-forth messages—Long got Claudius to embrace its communist roots. Claudius ironically declared an Ultra-Capitalist Free-for-All.

Underneath is an excerpt from the Slack channel where the Claudius vending machine was posting:
