National Poetry Day seems like a good excuse to share one of Larkin's most loved poems, a deceptively complex and resonant piece of writing.

Apologies for the poor quality. However this article by the excellent Brian Feeney in the Irish News does far more explaining than you’ll get anywhere else. Worth a read imo!
A photo of an item in the Irish regarding the ‘dispute’ on Garvaghy Road Portadown News by Brian Feeney. Lots of historical background worth exploring

My #painting "The Long Walk II" was painted when me and my bicycle sat in Galway by Claddagh Quay. Rain then softly landed on my face. And made the painting look funky. Then it got much heavier and washed all the paint off the canvas. So I returned the next day and started over. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. View across rich blue rippling water to narrow band across the centre of the painting consisting of a street of about two dozen terraced houses, the leftmost being 4 stories and the rest a mixture of 2 and 3 stories high, above a band of dark blue that is a quay wall. Windows and doors are dark simple soft rectangles. Houses are single colours of, from left to right, blue, 5 white 2-story houses, blue, yellow, pale green, brown, white, maroon, red, pale green, white, blue, brown, yellow, blue, yellow, white, and yellow. Slated roofs are dark blue. Sky is stormy yellow mixed in with patches of green and red, dark in patches near the top, brightest at the bottom above the roofs. The water closest to the dark quay wall has less rippling and shows a dark shimmering reflection of the houses. Foreground includes some grass and flagstones of curved quayside on left. A #painting from County Cork. "Cobh II" was painted one day when cycling between friends in Carrigtwohill and Carrigaline, both of whom I'd originally met online, and I took in Great Island specifically to paint the Cork harbour town. The painting was finished when back home. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. View of town on a hillside as seen from a pier. Under a yellow painterly sky a gothic blue cathedral with a steeple on the left end sits on top of the town. Below it and to the left is a row of tall dark blue supporting stone arches under the green stone boundary wall and walkway which drops down to a jumble of blue slate roofs. Along the bottom across the full width of the painting is the front street scene of 7 buildings, each with 3 stories though of varied heights, and joined together save for one gap. They have shop fronts at street level, upper stories are coloured, left to right, pink, white, yellow, orange, red, teal, and yellow, with contrasting window frames and details including dormer windows. Buildings are 3 or 4 window bays wide, all narrow windows coloured in a blue or a black. A couple of small trees with a ball of bright green foliage are on the left, and up beside the cathedral there is one at the left end and 2 at the right. Parts of the fronts of other buildings are visible in gaps up the hill to the top on the right. Signed top right in blue on yellow sky, Liam Daly

A #painting from Ireland's southwest. "Skibbereen, Main Street" came from a moment when I arrived by bicycle in the west Cork town facing these four fabulous buildings so I stayed there stopped, sitting on my saddle, just staring until I had painted them in my head. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #UrbanGaze
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. Front view of terrace of four 3-story buildings with shop fronts at street level. Upper stories of leftmost building is light brown with "C Connolly" on fascia of maroon and peach shopfront, next is taller and blue-green with no signage visible on its grey-green shopfront, next is yellow and same height as blue-green one, with "Pierce Hickey" on white fascia below a clock and line of flowers and above the shopfront of orange trim, and rightmost is a lower height and a very pale blue, almost white. Each building is two window bays wide save for the rightmost which is cropped at the third window. The rightmost building has gold lettering of Field's Coffee on its dark green fascia and below it the windows and doors are all topped with white arches. All windows of upper stories have white trim, with the first story of the two central buildings having a white triangle over each. All roofs are slate of a smokey blue violet, and chimneys a muted grey-green and purple. Sky is painterly orange, more yellow lower down beyond the left edge of the leftmost building. Foreground is street surface of purple brushed brokenly over red with a triangular turquoise traffic island housing two planters of blooming flowers, a street sign and directional signs. Another west of Ireland #painting "Westport, High Street" came from a time I was cycling in County Mayo and after climbing up this hill I stopped because I was feeling a bit blue. And yellow and purple. Westport is beautiful from so many angles; I'll be painting it again #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape
Landscape format in painterly acrylics. Under a canary smoky yellow sky with touches of orange breaking through, we are looking downhill at the far side of a street of 2-story houses stepping down, most of which are in pale yellows, with pale purple and blue slate roofs that have touches of navy, and red indicating the slates, and are punctuated by white and yellow chimneys. Only the path of the left side of the street is visible by the left edge of the painting, until the bottom of the hill when the street bends right bringing the houses on the left side into view. Road surface is blue with central dashed white line, and paths are bright yellow with a tall dark streetlamp in the left foreground. Cars parked on both sides mostly in whites and blues. Small narrow trees with sparse green foliage are dotted along both sides of the street, but at the top on the right side is a large tree having dark foliage of violet and blue and some red highlights that reaches the top of the painting. Purple and blue roofs of other streets are at bottom of hill punctuated by glimpses of yellow gables and a couple of taller green square buildings with roofs. On far side of town is a mass of trees of violet and dark blue across the full width of the painting. Beyond is a flat-topped hill with a parallel row of grey-green fields. In this distance on the horizon are pale blue rounded hills on the right and a soft pyramidal one in the centre. Signed bottom right in dark blue on the pale blue road surface, Liam Daly

A County Kerry #painting. "Looscaunagh Lough" I painted based on a day where I had been painting in Kenmare then packed up and cycled up into the mountains, over Moll's Gap and up there, high above Killarney National Park, I stopped by this lake. Because hey. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Glimmering lake, with reeds running across the foreground of varying greens, from off-white to warm olive to loud green to almost blue, some topped with small brown balls. There are uneven yellow-green grass slopes on the left leading to rocks in the water. The far side of the lake in a band running horizontally across the centre has lime grassy slopes, dark green bushes mostly on the right, and further back rocky olive outcrops with a large clump of dark blue-green pine trees peaking on a mound right of centre with several orange brown long vertical trunks visible at the bottom of that peak. The water has dark bands of reflections of the dark trees between the sparkling very pale blue and white areas. There are also some touches of horizontal strokes of lilac particularly in the foreground. Sky is very pale blue save for feint white fluffy clouds. Signed top left in turquoise, Liam Daly

My final thoughts. What will the legacy be of what looks like the biggest Fleadh ever? Because tomorrow morning Belfast goes back to normal: empty units, boarded-up buildings, gridlocked roads, a taxi system that falls apart when people actually need it, and Sunday trading laws from another age.

Have a #painting while I sort food. "Aasleagh Falls" came out of a day I travelled around Killary Harbour. On the River Erriff, before it joins the harbour, the falls are in Mayo but only stone's throw from Leenane in Galway. I was on my bicycle, throwing stones to check. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mat board. Foreground is a narrow band at the bottom of black and dark blue rocks with water flowing through and around in several places but prominent in the centre is the white water falling straight down a step. Above it is a wide band of a hill of greeny-yellow and orange that drops down to the river where a line of dark green bushes separates it from the rocks and the water. A white bungalow is perched on top, facing in sunlight to the right with its gable end facing the viewer in shadow. It has a dark blue slate roof with a white chimney. Dark green bushes are dotted along the slightly curving top. Behind that is the top of a mountain ridge of pale pink save for a cloud shadow of turquoise and some grey details of rock faces. The sky is a pale lilac grey. Signed bottom right in yellow on very dark blue, Liam Daly

Have a west of Ireland #painting. "Lough Nafurnace" in south Connemara I've painted a couple of times, first struck by it when I was in my teens and destined for the Gaeltacht. This painting came out of a time I spent alone looking at the lake thinking life wasn't half bad. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Square format in acrylics on canvas. View across a lake to a low pale yellow rocky horizontal strip of land where rocks are cream with blue-grey shadows. Sitting into the strip, one-third of the way out from the right-hand edge, is a white 2-storey house, rendered in pale pink on the front facing viewer where it is in shadow, and brighter on the left on the gable end. It has a blue slate roof with a narrow white chimney in the centre. There is also gable front at the left corner adjoining the gable end, while to its right are 3 upper story windows and what looks like it might be a porch on the ground level to the right. Immediately behind the house and to its right side are dark green-blue bushes. Further back behind the house is a purple undulating ridge and behind that in the distance is a range of pale blue mountains, softly undulating from their highest point by the left edge close to the top of the painting, down to the right where they disappear behind the purple ridge directly behind the house. The bottom 3 quarters of the picture is a lake of lilac with some ripples of bright blue and turquoise, with narrow grassy lump of an islet in the middle housing a single small bush, and a similar yellow ochre grassy mound jutting out from left in foreground. Rocks are littered along left edge. Sky is white clouds with grey-lilac on their lower parts and all blended into a pale blue. In the foreground the water ripples diagonally from the grassy mound. Ah here, have another County Mayo #painting. "Ballina II" came out of multiple trips to the town on the River Moy where traditionally I have too much fun. I also would stand in quiet and enjoy the river. Think I've done 5 paintings of Ballina now, and I suspect I'm not finished. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in loose acrylics on canvas. View up river, rendered in a light to royal blue, on to a faint suggestion of a pale blue bridge in the distance on the left. Mid-ground on right is dark grey cathedral in tones of blue-green, with a square steeple end closest to river. Side facing river is in dark shadow. Reflection of steeple's dark side in water is wobbly navy vertical band down to bottom of the picture. Trees in greens and dark blue are either side of cathedral. Bands of green and blue suggest an embankment at river's edge. Sky is messy yellows with smudged-in whites and feint touches of pink. Signed top left in dark blue, Liam Daly

I need to make a fresh pot of tea, so here's a #painting. "Howth from East Pier" was painted because every time I enter the peninsula it's like stepping into another world, so much bigger than it should be. It has given me some of my happiest times, often in silence. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear.
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. View from pier back inland to a row of pubs and restaurants perpendicular to pier and above them a green bush covered promontory with a flat top where sitting on top is a fat and flat cylindrical Martello tower, its stones rendered in browns. To the right a street bends uphill left into village. Behind village in the distance on right is tree line of lilac and hills of pale turquoise stretch across painting behind Martello tower and on to the left and a group of houses. On the left of the bottom of the promontory is another small road. It bends up to right behind the promontory after going past on the left a 3-storey pale green apartment building overlooking behind it a small strand. High above that cove of an almost sheer wall of green bushes sits a white and cream housing estate with front gables. Harbour water is on right in short horizontal strokes of pale blues and greens; wilder sea is on left, bluer and in choppier strokes, separated from pier by rocks of pale olive and orange, and at the water's edge, maroon. Pier is pinks, with a subdued pale yellow on lower deck on right. Sky is very pale teal. Signed bottom right: Liam Daly

A #painting for you. A street to me is a wonderland of right angles, a collection of squares and rectangles I could look at for a long time and paint forever. It’s also a place to buy bread, drink tea, and talk to strangers. "Innishannon Main Street" came out of doing all that. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics in a very loose style of many colours and black ink lines. Front view of a section of a terrace showing 3 buildings on a main street. All buildings are 2 stories with a shop front at street level. The largest building is in the centre. It is pink with 3 window bays wide in the upper story and at street level a brown double frontage either side of a central narrow dark grey-green door. The building on the right is the same height. It's lemon yellow above a green shop front, and has 2 quite small windows in its upper floor. The building on the left is a lower height then the other 2, and is cropped on the the left edge at its 2nd window. It has a very dark brown shop frontage at street level. Flecks and blotches of other colours, especially blues and oranges, can be seen under and around all buildings. Roofs are all slate, lilac grey on the central pink building with 3 skylights, dark blue grey on the building on the right with one skylight, and mid-blue grey on the left building. The sky is a cloudy blue with hints of green. Ink lines are used in partial outlining, window and shopfront detailing, and antennas at chimneys. Road surface is a blurry blue on top of a base of orange which is not completely covered. Signed bottom right, Liam Daly

A #painting for you from the southwest of Ireland now. "Youghal, Main Street" came out of a visit to the east Cork town where I got to enjoy nice food, nice beer, and nice rain, before cycling in the sun on a perfect green sky day. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Under a bright lime sky we have a view from a junction down a main retail street of bold shadows straight ahead to the clock tower arch gate at the end, and to the left in the foreground is another street. With bright sunlight coming from the right the buildings on the right are in shadow, mostly pale blue upper stories and dark blue shop fronts, with dark blue shadow stretching across half of turquoise road. A pattern of shadows is also on side street to left. Double yellow lines are on roads. Closest building on the right along the right edge of the painting is pale pink and blue. Buildings on the left are in the sun so are bright most notably the yellow 3-story corner building nearest the viewer. It has red corner blocks, red Kodak signs, and dark windows with shadows under window sills. The building next door to it is red with a red canopy, then further down the street the buildings are pale pinks and blues. Black bollards are on the pale turquoise footpath. #painting "Mayo Lake" was the second time I painted Carrowmore Lake after cycling around the north County Mayo haven. The western side was particularly idyllic. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. Very pale blue-teal cloudless sky. Foreground is a band of montbretia of wide lime and yellow blades topped with rows of small bright orange flowers many of them floating above the mass. Behind that is a wide horizontal band of blue water dappled with lighter and darker strokes, some of lilac. Across the water is a band of land with rocky brown bluffs at the water's edge, parallel green fields sloping down to the bluffs, and above that a grey-green hilly top rising up on the left and dotted with white cottages. A Dublin #painting "Poolbeg, Kayakers". The first of two versions I did of a view of two people crossing Scotsman's Bay. I watched planning how I would paint it, then drove my eyes mad by painting morse code sparkles on the water before painting between the marks. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #TidesOutTues
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. A painting of two halves. The bottom is the a bay of pale blue and the top half mostly sky of yellow with dark features and details along the horizon. Two kayaks in bottom right quadrant, one blue and one to its right yellow, make their way across water that is heavily dappled with sunlight in pale cream dashes and dots, towards the back of a pier running horizontally across the centre of the picture. Beyond on the left, rising up from a cluster of dark blue buildings, are two tall chimney stacks with their top halves of red and white bands set against a yellow-orange sky, and their bottom halves a cold grey green of unpainted cement. Just to their right, almost in the centre of the painting, are 4 smaller narrow chimneys of grey green, with two of them slight higher than the other two but reaching no higher than half the height of the main red and white banded chimneys. To the right of them, and continuing to the right edge of the painting, peeping over the pier are white boat masts mixing in with white lamp-posts and set against a pale blue band of distant trees and/or buildings along the horizon. Upper section of pier rear is dark blue with lighter blue isolated stones and the odd red or orange one, and lower section of the rear of the pier is a band of rip-rap in navy and violet with light blue and dark orange rocky highlights. The kayakers are very dark figures except for their red life jackets which match their paddles. Signed bottom left in red, Liam Daly

A #painting from the north west of Ireland. "Croaghloskey" was one of those scenes I bumped into every day when I lived with a little dog in a big landscape where every cottage we walked past was populated with an old man and a dog. This is our place, I would say to her. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Art
Landscape format in acrylics on mat board. A largely purple and turquoise feel off this depiction of a hill with a patchwork of fields on it. Bottom third of painting is a field in the foreground of a mess of broken teal and rust and purple strokes, mostly short horizontal ones but for along the very bottom where there are vertical ones suggestive of grass. At the far side of the field is a dry stone wall of pale grey stones, running slightly diagonally down from left to right as it undulated gently. Past it is the hill, flat topped with its bottom slopes on both side cropped at the edges of the painting. It has a dark diagonal hedgerow running from the bottom left up to the right edge halfway up the height of the hill. On the near side is a ploughed field of diagonal purple and a alizarin lines running perpendicular to the hedgerow, with a solid purple-grey triangle in its bottom left corner. On the far side of the hedgerow cut out of the rust of the hill are 8 fields of various greens and blues randomly arranged with dark outlines of varying thicknesses. The sky is teal, with a darker horizontal band at the top. Signed top right, Liam Daly

Have a #painting while I try to live a little. "Naas, Main Street" came out of my fascination with the shapes of the streets of our towns, villages and cities. Naas is a place I've gone to more times since it's been by-passed - not on principle, just because I like Kildare. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear
Landscape format, in acrylics in a very loose style of many colours and black ink lines, on heavy watercolour paper in miniature size of 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches. Front view of two buildings on a main street. On the right is a large 3-story building with 5 narrow windows across its width in the top story and a pub front at street level one side of a central narrow door and a metal railing gate on the other side through to a courtyard or garage. Above the pub sign is a large window on the 2nd floor. The building is generally a pale creamy orange but is flecked with many different colours likes reds, blues, greens, purples, and yellows, and it has a couple of red flags flying above the pub fascia. It is flat-topped with chimney pots peeping up on the right. The building adjoining it on the left is two stories, has a slate roof of generally grey with other colours, like green, wine and orange, mixed in, and a tall green, blue and pink chimney at its right end. It has a shop front at street level with blue-green fascia and posts. Three narrow window bays are across its 2nd story. The building is generally yellow but with significant sections that have pink or orange or blue or green. Something red is in the shop window. At both sides we see just enough of the respective adjoining buildings to see they have corner stones. Sky is a painterly blue. Footpath across bottom is broad strokes of blue and green over orange. Signed bottom right in ink, Liam Daly

A west of Ireland #painting. "Stone Walls and the Grass is Green II" is a scene in County Galway. If you travel out from Galway city beyond Spidal, ideally by bicycle, then when you're near Inverin and look across Galway Bay to County Clare, you might see this. #SpéirGhorm #WallsOnWednesday #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas panel. Under a dark maroon sky, with some feint streaks of dark grey-blue, is a line of pale blue gently undulating mountains along the horizon. In front of that is a strip of water in a mid blue darker than the mountains. Bottom two-thirds of picture is a bright green landscape, mostly flat but with some slight slopes. On top is a network of dry stone walls detailed in pale greys and blues and yellows. The fields are a leaf-grass green with some blue-grey of stones breaking through. Along the bottom is a row of stones that is the top of a wall in the foreground, and beyond it a dark blue shadow of the wall on the grass. Other large dark shadows are also cast by some walls in the mid-ground left and right, and on the left side of some walls and some individual stones. Signed top right in blue, Liam Daly

I wrote about this yesterday, you know. A brief history of 'legitimate concerns' (and who decides what those are) jrnl.ie/7069404

A brief history of 'legitimate concerns' (and who decides what those are)
The evolution of the phrase into a dog whistle is, frankly, a concern.
