Preemptively cutting 'optional' Medicaid programs in anticipation of cuts is going to disproportionately harm marginalized people! Democrats COULD have increased the scope of federal funding mandates to make these core programs, and they didn't.

Paying for doulas to help birthing moms in maternity care deserts was a priority for Montana. But it halted the plan amid a budget shortfall and fears over coming federal Medicaid cuts.

@Mike James Anyone who actually knows people who need Medicaid (not Medicare) and can't work knows that they often have a lot of trouble dealing with the paperwork and understaffed Medicaid offices. My own son, who had a severe mental disability in another city, went without Medicaid for long periods because he could not handle the paperwork. He couldn't keep jobs because of his condition, although to outer appearance he was "able-bodied." He got on Medicaid when he was taken by EMS workers to an emergency room and they signed him up. Later he lost it, until another EMS-assisted visit to the ER. He died at the age of 39 because of a cardiovascular condition that should have been caught years ago. Republican lawmakers are soulless enablers of tyranny wearing crosses while passing laws allowing millions to die.

“ …which will shed millions of eligible beneficiaries by overwhelming them with pointless paperwork and other needlessly complicated administrative requirements”

We have a family member, learning disabled, a type 1 diabetic, with stage 3b kidney disease, and who lost 75% of his heart muscle several years ago, leaving him with an ejection fraction of approximately 23%.

He is on Social Security disability and is on Medicaid.

Starting nearly 8 years ago he first was placed on Medicaid.

Generally the Medicaid recertification process was reasonably simple, meaning a resubmission of the documents indicating any changes, focusing on income.

A few weeks ago, for no reason he was dropped off Medicaid, and it required several physical trips to the Medicaid office to drop off duplicates of previously submitted documents.

Each and every time we had the individual receiving the documents stamp in each and every document, and give us a copy of the submitted documents.

This occurred four (4) separate times, resulting in our having four (4) separate sets of copies with four (4) separate date stamps.

To add insult to injury, they asked us to resubmit another few documents.

Finally we got him put back on but only after a we encountered an individual who apparently realized something wasn’t as it should be, and actually stated she couldn’t see why any of this occurred; also they suggested, in spite of the evidence of they stamped in copies, they couldn’t find them.

Outright fraud.

Proud to be among sixty-nine faculty members at Rutgers Law School who signed on to the Harvard letter (h/t @beidelson.bsky.social) affirming our commitment to the rule of law. And I want to highlight something unique our school is doing that I hope will become a model for other schools.
April 13, 2025
TO THE STUDENTS OF RUTGERS LAW SCHOOL
-----------------
With our colleagues across the nation, we recognize that the present moment is an extraordinary time to
study law, as the rule of law itself seems to be at risk. The letter below reproduces, virtually verbatim, a
letter that the overwhelming majority of Harvard Law professors sent to that school’s student body. We
agree with the views expressed there, so we are adding our signatures and addressing it to you:
-----------------
We are privileged to teach and learn the law with you. We write to you today in our individual
capacities because we believe that American legal precepts and the institutions designed to uphold
them are being severely tested, and many of you have expressed to us your concerns and fears about the
present moment.
Each of us brings different, sometimes irreconcilable, perspectives to what the law is and should be.
Diverse viewpoints are a credit to our school. But we share, and take seriously, a commitment to the
rule of law: for people to be equal before it, and for its administration to be impartial. That
commitment is foundational to the whole legal profession, and to the special role that lawyers play in
our society. As the Model Rules of Professional Conduct provide: "A lawyer is ... an officer of the legal
system and a public citizen having special responsibility for the quality of justice."
The rule of law is imperiled when government leaders:
● single out lawyers and law firms for retribution based on their lawful and ethical
representation of clients disfavored by the government, undermining the Sixth Amendment;
● threaten law firms and legal clinics for their lawyers’ pro bono work or prior government
service;
● relent on those arbitrary threats based on public acts of submission and outlays of funds for
favored causes; and
● punish people for lawfully speaking out on matters of public concern.
While reasonable people can disagree about the characterization of particu…We reaffirm our commitment to the rule of law and to our roles in teaching and upholding the
precepts of a fair and impartial legal system.
