Could the Icelandic no-vote revitalize discussion about the EEA-agreement? Will it make the EU interested in including more countries in the EEA, or make it less flexible towards EEA? None of this is what Iceland and Norway want, and I do not think it is very likely. Still interesting to consider!

The ULEZ chat reminds me of smtg I've wondered for years: should people that take climate politics seriously define climate change more precisely? Eg, should we narrow climate to a single issue, put it in the back burner when times are bad, or an area constantly accessible to politicians? quick 🧵

At the Political Quarter today, Tor Mikkel Wara say this:

'Oil and gas have eradicated poverty. It has made the world a better place. I don't think there are any scientists, anywhere, in the IPCC who believe that the fossil benefits are less than the disadvantages. This is also stated in the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change actually warns against too abrupt climate measures because it can promote hunger. This is important to take note of.'

His counter-debater Frøya Skjold Sjursæther does not represent the IPCC. But I can answer this. I was the lead author of the IPCC's 6th assessment report, and I am the main author of the 7th main report that is being prepared now.

I do not recognize Wara's interpretation of our work.

NO, the IPCC does not say that oil has eradicated poverty.
Wara's point is a notion that has overwintered in Norwegian oil communities for decades. This is not something that is analysed by the IPCC, but it has been thoroughly documented over many decades that the extraction of oil resources has had negative effects on social development in many countries (Norway is the shining exception). See the summary of an article summarizing this literature and the link in the comments section.

NO, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) does not warn against climate action that is too abrupt because it can lead to poverty.
Our main message, on the other hand, was and is that it is urgent. See the image of the most important sentence prepared by the panel. Miljødirektoratet have translated the main points the panel concluded in the 6th assessment report on energy, and it was this:

'If the world is to achieve its climate goals, the energy sector must immediately transition from fossil energy sources to energy sources with no or low…

Spain's renewables build-out has structurally decoupled its electricity prices from gas markets. Gas now sets the price in only 15% of hours, compared to 90% in Italy. Countries that invested early in clean power are far less exposed to fossil fuel price shocks. Those that didn't now pay the price.
