The Mas d'Azil cave in France is famous for the numerous objects found there, spanning many prehistoric periods. One of the most iconic is this Magdalenian spear thrower known as the "Faon aux oiseaux" (Fawn with Birds.) Carved out of reindeer antler, it is possible that its use was only ceremonial.
The "Faon aux oiseaux" (Fawn with Birds) spear thrower from the Mas d'Azil Cave (Mas-d'Azil, Occitania. France). Middle Magdalenian Period.
Carved out of reindeer antler. 32 cm long. It depicts a young chamois, fawn or ibex. Due to its relative fragility, some theorize that it wasnt made with a practical use, being ceremonial instead. It was probably attached to a wooden shaft by the three perforations at the base of the object. The top of the carving has been traditionally interpreted as two birds pecking at each other.
