I saw a dog in a lion ruff on the beach yesterday and that brought me great joy
A medium size sandy coloured dog with a curly coat, square nose and folded triangular ears is exploring a beach wearing a harness and an orange lion ruff. He has his nose towards the sand and is in the process of moving from one sniff spot to another. The ruff is the whole point

Started a new job, mostly outdoors, with the most training I have ever had to do for a job on the back of a pretty bad mental health episode and I am so tired my brain is trying to escape through my eyes. Safe to say no writing has been done

Don't enter this. You'll lose all rights to your story. Period. Competitions like this need to be called out, so they learn their good reputation shouldn't be used to steal the bread from writers' mouths. And that we're not all clueless rubes waiting to be taken advantage of.

I also gave said bug to my girlfriend (inevitable but damn I feel guilty) and we've spent the last few days sitting on the sofa like little coughing zombies who are periodically a bit hysterical pathetically trying to look after each other. I think I forgot what outside looks like.

Have two weeks between ending my old job and starting my new one which was gonna be great writing time then came down with the winter bug to beat all winter bugs and now have to sleep sitting up to avoid coughing up my insides. Weirdly enough not feeling inspired

Hard to know what to say watching the recent news from the US from the UK except that in the midst of truly horrifying cruelty and hatred I've seen so many stories of people coming together to fight for each other and care for their communities and that is incredible

New writing routine is: wake up a bit early to write, struggle to wake up, open computer and stare at scrivener, run out of time and have to get ready for work 😂 gah

Every time I have a long train journey I think I'll get loads of writing done and then inevitably don't because it's cramped and there are people near me which apparently turns off my creative mind entirely but I did manage 4 handwritten pages in an 8 hour journey. Unsure if that's a win

This is the ass of a killer bella
A zoomed in picture of a woman's tote bag sitting on a blue train seat. The tote is cream and a stylized Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen is slut dropping in heels and a rainbow thong in front of a two tone blue heart. You can only read the word bella below him but the tote says 'this is the ass of a killer bella'

I've managed roughly four sentences of writing and three submissions this week and got a couple of rejections which have felt particularly rough on top of a week of ✨anxiety✨. Petition to restart the year in Feb?

As a side note I requested a load of books in my library's ebook format and they can't get them as they aren't on the borrow box catalogue (trad pubbed and including even The Fifth Season) which surprised me. A shame more sff isn't even available as ebooks to the libraries

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix. I've been in such a reading rut but so far this is working for me (high praise for my current state). Very readable whilst still being excellently written. I've bounced off so much this last year I'm pleased to be getting through it and enjoying.

First two reads of the year (both half finished): The Potency of Ungovernable Impulses by Malka Older on audiobook. This series has been such a nice easy, comforting one for me and is perfect in the little mental health blip I'm having and has been getting me through the last week.

A love letter to public libraries: I'm in a new town waiting for my girlfriend to finish work. I have three bags I need to finish work too. The public library here is beautiful and has a community area and computer area both in solid use and loads of books and a free coffee machine ❤️ more of this!

I would have said nothing tanks your ability to write like the looming end of a six month contract and the depressing cycle of applications and rejections and then I added antidepressant withdrawals (brain zaps, parathesia and mood swings anyone?) to the mix 😂

Any time Tories start blaming Labour for the wretched state of *insert topic of the day*, it's crucial we recall who got us here with 14 years of cuts and privatisation, wrecking public services and social support systems. (Many other valid reasons to criticise the current government are available)

The vast majority of friends in my area (let's say within 1-2 hours) live either with parents like me or one with an older landlord. Makes it harder. One friend does still just hang out but she's a family friend and knows my parents well too. Other friends are scattered upwards of 5 hours away

World Athletics’ mandatory genetic test for women athletes is misguided. I should know – I discovered the relevant gene in 1990
World Athletics says its genetic test for women ensures ‘the integrity of women’s sport’ – but science does not support this overly simplistic idea.

Weird how people forget other humans. Brainstorm with a friend, a colleague, ask your mum, (and I don't mean ask your mum in a sarky way I thoroughly enjoy teasing out problems with mine although I know that's not the case for everyone). I promise it's actually fun 🤦🏼‍♀️

Screaming into an echo chamber I know but I beg people to remember the value of human thought, creativity, and connection, and deep and slow analysis. This has inherent value. Even if gen AI could effectively replace these (it can't right now) it SHOULDN'T. For me that that's almost more important
