Glad I have seen it before... even if the last time was thirty years ago. Think I'll wait until it's back in Bayeux before trying to see it again...

The problem with IHT is the way it delays probate and thus prolongs the grieving and moving on period. Better to tax legacies, which also encourages testators to distribute their wealth more widely.

Indeed. Maybe if politicians had to work for membership income rather than schmoozing billionaire donors. And charge the Electoral Commission with maximising turnout as well as ensuring integrity.

We do have Australia as an example and can look at how the issues @legalclaret.bsky.social raises are dealt with there. FWIW I think there are less illiberal, but probably more expensive, ways of increasing democratic engagement. .

and clear the table and put the things in the dishwasher and empty the dishwasher and pick up clothes and put them in the wash and change the bedsheets.... this is what we want. Not something to do our fun stuff for us.

I rather ENJOY reading books rather than reading being some dull task I’d like AI to do. Now if AI could vacuum our cluttered tiny place with awkward stairs; lift up and down all the shoes 👞 and things, and vacuum under them back tidier… and empty itself with no dust.. and sell stuff on Vinted..

The Tories have had over two years to come up with a broad set of new policies and they've reverted to their same old mean spirited small minded ones they have had for decades. More austerity and the type of deregulation that led to Grenfell.

One word beginning with R - is it a new even more boring Radio 4 programme or a new even more fascist political party? You never know these days...

It bears ALL the hallmarks of a major financial crash. Asset inflation, over-gearing (leverage), circularity - buying your customer's stock so they keep on buying your kit. The only uncertainty is when it will happen, but happen it will. Tulips and beyond.

which begs the question as to why or how this particular motion got as far as it did. It can take ages - years - for a motion to make it to the Conference agenda.

This is absolutely right. If chatbots have agency, it is because a programmer game them agency (or allowed it to emerge). AI operators, human or corporate, are responsible for ALL of what the AI does.

The Green motion is an abject failure for so many reason but it is also exactly how online debate styles transfer to real political spaces. We're increasingly in times where everything is black or white and everything in between is a screaming match that takes the entire progressive movement down.

I'm certainly considering leaving. I think this vote will certainly have cost us any chance we had in Thursday's byelection. But also, I also don't think flouncing is the right solution. Stay and fight the entryism.

Edward Barrow @ejoftheweb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
hmm. 400 online attendees left immediately after that vote. Twice the majority by which it passed. Not sure online attending is actually working to prevent entryism

Edward Barrow @ejoftheweb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes. We do loads of online voting for candidate selection and positions in the hierarchy. No reason we couldn't use it for policy too. A conference vote for a big (or controversial) policy change should trigger a membership poll.
010
Edward Barrow @ejoftheweb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Where to begin? I'd make conference votes indicative, not binding, for a start. And key policy decisions decided by the membership as a whole.

Edward Barrow @ejoftheweb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Anyone can attend who can afford the time, the travel, the acommodation and the conference fee. And who can tolerate interminable procedural motions from the floor of the plenary sessions.

Edward Barrow @ejoftheweb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Agree with everything you've said, but the main constitutional weakness of GPEW is conference supremacy on policy. As a member I did not get to vote on this motion (although I am constantly asked to vote for positions in the hierarchy).

I am considering my membership as a result of this monumentally stupid vote. Unfortunately, it has been coming our way since the collapse of Corbynism.

AI artslop is definitely evolving. The giveaways used to be weird or additional body parts. Now it's that focus thing, where the whole image is in impossible focus, unconstrained by any depth of field.

The other benefit of EEA-only is that we wouldn't have to join the Common Agricultural Policy. Although underfunded, the current nature-focused UK ag support schemes are streets ahead of the (current) CAP which is still too beholden to big agribiz.

Okaay. It wasn't that long ago that I read that America had ordered more chips than it had datacentres to put them in (or energy to power them). Supply and demand leading and lagging, nothing unusual here, as you were.

also, tourists. Soho is full of them. And office workers' lunches - cheaper than a caff, more interesting than a sandwich. Rent on a market stall is much more affordable for traders than Soho b&m, and cooked food margins higher than veg.

walked along Berwick St the other day. Still a "street market". But no veg, and only one over-priced fruit stall. Just loads and loads of takeaway food stalls.

I have a theory that the terrible industrial relations of the post-war period had a lot to do with many of the managerial cadres being ex-military officer class too uptight to address their personal wartime trauma and subsuming it into confrontational management practices.

For sure, they want to vote on principle. Don't we all. But engaged voters understand the importance of tacticality. And for most young ppl, anti-racism/Reform is a pretty strong principle.

I think tactical voting has become pretty ingrained already. Be interesting to see how long it will take after fair votes are introduced for habits to change.
