The pines stand upon the mountain’s shoulder, their upper branches kindled by sunlight, though the forest below them lies in shadow. Beyond the nearest ridges, the mountains recede in blue ranks, and above them the clouds have gathered into such mighty forms that the whole sky seems to have taken on the shape and substance of a second mountain range.

How splendidly the storm makes itself known before a drop has fallen! Dark folds stretch across the valley; bright edges appear and vanish among the rising cloud towers. The trees receive it all without haste. Each pine holds its place on the slope, sunlit for an hour or shaded the next, rooted through both. One might wander a lifetime among these hills and never come upon this same arrangement of light again. I would be grateful for the hour spent watching it change.
