Its almost as if the Tories, for the last 20 or so years, are either (1) willing to say and do stuff that actively harms everyone, for the sake of the votes of older, wealthier, more frightened folk; or (2) been terribly bad at fiscal and economic policy.

The idea that Oxford “competes for students” is laughable. But this is the great unsaid principle; that some universities are inherently superior, that they must be enabled to survive, and that all other institutions (and staff, and even students) are expendable.

Very strange that he holds to the principle that “universities should have to compete” for students, when he went to one of a small handful of universities that absolutely view competing for students as beneath them.

Competition, with its lovely clinical simplicity, is an ideal answer to *any* problem, for policy makers wanting to keep their hands clean. It enables us to avoid arguing about the messy tensions between means, aims and values. And only the deserving survive, so competition can’t ever fail!

Your occasional reminder that performative sneering at whole genres of fiction is not a sign of intelligence, nor is performative misery a sign of superior talent. Read what brings you joy. No-one else gets to decide or to control what that means to you.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In panel one we see Sarah, the protagonist, lying in bed with the lights out. She says, "Is everyone ready for sleep?"
In panel two we see a brain, heart, and stomach. They say, "Yes!" "Yup!" and "Yep!"
In panel three we see a bladder, squirming. A speech panel says "Bladder?"
In panel four the bladder looks up. It says, weakly, "I don't know".

If we were doing risk management on AI, one of the lines would be about misalignment (ie AI doesn't do what we think it's meant to) with catastrophic results This *might* have a low probability but it would certainly have a high impact, and you'd expect maybe this would make us slow down and think

Powerful and important letter about artificial so-called intelligence from Sheila Hayman from Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, in the FT today
Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies.
The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop.
Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning.
In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds.
So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!).
Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs.
The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia.
It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet.
Sheila Hayman
Member of the Advisory Board, Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, London NW1, UK

I feel like I spend so much of my time hearing insane conservative talking points that can all be explained by that chart about the prevalence of left handedness
Chart of the history of left handedness sbowing a decrease in the early 1900s when children were forced to stop using their left hands followed by a steady rise until it evened out and stayed at around 12% once children were no longer forced to use their right hands
