On #BookshopDay2026, a rather charming reconstruction of the shop of a Roman bookseller (bibliopola = βιβλιοπώλης). According to Martial, there many such shops (as well as cobblers!) on the Argiletum, the street that took you into the forum from the Subura, Rome’s crowded slum district.

And - fascinatingly - that women were more oppressed in classical Athens than pretty much anywhere else in ancient Greece. According to Professor Edith Hall, who also has a LOT to say about classical women's experience of everyday life and religious experience.

Killing two birds with one vase on #InternationalMusicDay and #InternationalDayOfOlderPersons. An elderly lyre teacher instructs his pupil, with the more difficult cithara hanging on the wall for more advanced lessons if he improves. Vase made in Athens c. 470 BCE. Now in Berlin.

Théodore Chassériau was born 20/9/1819. Many of his paintings use classical heroines simply to allow gawping at naked mammary glands (Andromeda etc), but I do like his patriotic illustrations of Vercingetorix's (unsuccessful) rising against Julius Caesar better known through "Asterix the Gaul"

Aristotle's night on the tiles. These 18th-century azulejos (tin glazed ceramic tiles) at the University of Évora, Portugal, show Dante's Aristotle, ‘the master of those who know’, gazed on with reverence by all the other great thinkers—Plato, Socrates, Thales etc (Inferno 4).
