My mother, the inimitable Jane Yolen passed away this morning after a blessingly short fight with Alzheimer’s. She did not suffer, and went peacefully into the ether which, I am certain for her, will be filled with words of the most exquisite beauty and meaning.

NIGHTMARE IN RED (1981) Acrylic Over Pastels - 25 ½” x 20” Tales from the Nightside is a collection of macabre stories by Charles L. Grant. I accepted a commission to do the cover art in the gloomy winter of 1980-81. 1/4

Angled view down on a horror montage set upon a red tinted, textured skull topped by a trio of rose blooms. Low in the immediate foreground one orbital reflects the glint of light on an eyeball. Nested low on the forehead a bat opens its maw wide in a scream. Set to the side is a tile with the number 3 and a creeping spider. Opposite rests a small stack of coins, the topmost decorated with a triangle. Smoke wafts out of a crack at the top back of the skull while tendrils of roots grow off the opposite side.

A bare-chested figure with jaundiced face and thinning hair steps out to offer a Halloween surprise. His head is cartoonishly bulbous with enormous ears set too far back on his skull. He presents as a frightening clown stripped of paint. His face tapers from high, hollow cheeks to pointed chin—jaw barely containing the crescent of wide upturned lips. His bulging eyes, dotted to pinpricks, are disturbingly unfocused as some psychotic fantasy plays out in his mind. With fingers slender and taloned, he offers an oversized lollipop pinched delicately at the stem. A black spider with shiny red abdomen is set in the spiral of amber candy proffered.
