I found this a powerful article. The entire toxic empathy part is mind-boggling. It is easy to be hateful, self-interested, and only take care of yourself. It is hard to be caring, empathetic and vulnerable. To give a shit. These ass-hats take the easy way out. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Quote from end of article that reads:

When I see brutality like we’ve all witnessed in Minnesota, I ask myself: Can I really find empathy for people who insist on dehumanizing others? I’m not sure, to be honest. I’m still working on it. I believe our hearts are big enough to hold two truths at once. We can see the humanity in even the worst of our fellow human beings and still fiercely resist tyranny and repression. We can stand firm without mirroring the cruelty of our opponents. These are dark days in America. To rekindle our light, we must reject cruelty and corruption. To be strong, we need more empathy, not less.

Another one of Zack’s posts that you want to like because his work is great, but can’t because what it says is definitively not likeable. My asters are still blooming in Edmonton. In November. We haven’t had a hard enough frost to kill them. That snow? Gone today, highs of 8 today, 12 (!) tomorrow.
Aster flowers peering through the snow that fell. Asters are cold hardy but should be dormant in early November as frosts should have been hard enough to kill them. But they haven’t been, and now the snow is gone.

#fieldworkfriday! Early June was steep hikes in Jasper National Park looking for erratics. The Canadian Rockies are truly astounding. One of my favourite places on the planet, lucky I live pretty close! So many geology questions remain. Also nice to support Jasper after last year’s awful fires. ⚒️🧪🪨
Looking towards the summit of Cinquefoil and the endless sea of mountain peaks to the north of Jasper. My favourite erratic I stumbled across, split and balanced and huge. Just casually resting against the slopes of Hawk Mountain. The Athabasca river flowing east to the left and some old burn scars across the valley - not from last year’s devastating fires. Some beauty erratics, including a few odd lithologies such as this metamorphic rock - a schist that had to have been brought over the continental divide from BC and outside of the Rockies. Cool! The ice was BIG. A lovely little Gog Fm Quartzite erratic on the ridge of Cinquefoil mountain.
