If you haven't started with talking to leaders, creating structure for them to tell you about their work in a way where you are helping them understand what you want to know and care about, what the hell do you hope to get from side stepping them and creating AI jira panopticon?

We can think of lots of things like markets; that doesn't mean it tells us anything useful. And once you've decided to think of something as a market, it is way too easy to get locked into market logics, which (all together now) are ideological as much as anything.

I think a driving force in ableism is fear. People haven't dealt with their own fear about losing ability and wow can we tell, those of us who've been through stuff. I am a fairly hopeful person about humanity in general but our capacity for rageful dehumanization wrt ableism really gets me down.

Price is by far the most legible characteristic in a low-information online marketplace, so yes, people will index on it often. That doesn't mean it's what they *want*. They are satisficing not the object but the process of choosing the object.

Last year I replaced grpc-go and connect-go with a thin layer of code that I use to write gRPC clients and servers on the Go standard library. Details are here: agent.io/posts/sidecar

Sidecar is a tiny Go package that can be used to make clients and servers that use the gRPC wire protocol.

@margin.at I'm somewhat averse to browser extensions with broad access permissions (certainly until I have first-hand experience with a service). Any chance there's a bookmarklet to be able to trigger margin.at on demand on a given page?

I don't care whether people who voted this administration into office "have a racist bone in their bodies". They were willing to ignore/overlook racist policies because they didn't think they personally would be affected, and it's sloppy reporting not to say that.

I think the reason AI propagandists are so flustered by the fact that no real writer wants to use their idiotic tools is that they themselves don't enjoy writing. They see it as a boring arduous chore to be avoided, while real writers actually enjoy writing and actually care about the quality of it.

Software licensing isn't just about user access; it’s a labor-rights decision. Open source licensing's next challenge is to consider the people who build the code, not just those who consume it.

Extremely this. Absolutely no one thinks that systems thinkers should get to do whatever the hell we want, but people are very bad at training us to be useful in ways that don't push against the core of what we are good at.

The hack is that instead of maintaining a list of people who can generate keys, I just made it so that anyone who is followed by my project account can generate keys. If @agent.io follows you, you're in the beta!
How I do this: Publish Docker binaries. All builds require a license key (a JWT that identifies the user). Add ATProto sign-in to my website. Any identity followed by my project account can generate license keys. Users activate the product with their keys.

I have a wild theory that a lot of people are extremely hostile to any sign of systems thinking because it implicitly pushes the conversation to problem space from solution space.

GenAI tooling is weird. It’s “just” an intervention. Because it’s a tool. Any tool introduction is an intervention. Which means they work the same way any intervention work: 1. Understand the preconditions and culture norms required for success 2. Set people up for success 3. Respond to feedback

I'm especially fond of the instant pot because it's given me insight into adoption of technologies. The people I know who use the instant pot regularly are people who cooked without one. Of the people I know who bought one, no one who said, "this will get me to cook more" still uses it.

In some ways, ICs (at least in tech and at big companies) have some leadership advantages because managers don't see them as direct competition. Good managers and ICs know this and take advantage of it by having ICs lead complicated cross-org initiatives

My rowing coach talks about "learning a thing" and "finding a thing" in similar ways. I love that, in contrast to the very mechanistic way a lot of tech(-adjacent) people talk about learning as "stuff into a mental slot for easy access later" which is not how learning works in my brain at all.

The fact that we frequently prefer interactions and experiences that feel cognitively easy is also a reliable illusion. We experience this in our learning all the time. This is also why I'm skeptical of any idea that developer experience should only be about making things FEEL easy

Folks, why aren’t we using LLMs for generating schedule estimates for development work??? We all loathe making those estimates, and we can just blame the LLM if the actual development time deviates from the estimate. “The LLM must have hallucinated a bad estimate”.

Waymos have an extensive history of blocking buses and first responder vehicles. Adding them to SF’s busiest transit corridor isn’t a recipe for success.

A three part cartoon. In the first part it shows a sad engineer looking at a big rubbish pile of tech complexity in the way of building apps

In the second part it has the title "What people think AI will do" with a Happy Non-Engineer on the left, a bubble with "AI!" then a rubbish pile titles "Hidden pile of complexity that no longer matters", then the Apps on the right again.

In the final part, titled "What is actually going to happen" is a sad engineer on the left. A new rubbish pile of complexity (AI pipelines, templates etc), then the AI bubble, then the old pile of complexity with two sadder engineers looking over it, then the apps on the far right
