I’m 34 years old and just now realizing that the kids who insisted on calling Leroy Brown “Encyclopedia” were maybe, possibly, not his friends.

I heard it said recently that software engineers are history’s first illiterate professional class. That’s overstated, but I think it’s directionally true enough to explain a LOT about the current state of the industry…and the world.

i have written a poem for father's day
FATHER’S DAY
As I stagger through my garage,
fingers bulging around the straps of four grocery bags in each fist,
I feel the handgrip of a child’s bicycle snag on my right hip pocket
and I know,
with the cursed clairvoyance I’ve developed over 11 years of parenthood
allowing me to anticipate but not change the outcome of unfortunate events,
that the bicycle will flip over and smash me on the shins
leading me to drop 2 glass jars of spaghetti sauce on the concrete floor
and I remind myself,
in that instant before the skin peels off my bones,
that this is what it’s all about.

“Only the good die young” is obviously untrue - cf the entire Wikipedia page of “Juvenile Serial Killers.” What people mean by that saying is something more akin to “only the good die too soon.”

here's to the crazy ones. the misfits. the rebels.
a founder tells his team: "after a spiritual pilgrimage, two mountaintop leadership retreats, an ayahuasca experience, and a devastating personal tragedy that threw everything else into perspective, I've concluded that our company needs to chase the same current trend as every single one of our competitors in the industry"

My preschooler tells me that the driver in The Wheels on the Bus song now says “I love you” instead of “Move on back”, and while I suppose there’s a chance the old driver was a racist, the new one seems to be just begging for a restraining order.

“the AI models are currently the worst they will ever be” (2026) Compare this claim to: “Netflix is currently the worst it will ever be” (2014) It is absolutely not a guarantee that currently subsidized services will continually get better relative to you, the end user

Interesting point raised by a smart friend today: Traditional DevRel/tech community building are over, because AI kills loyalty to platforms / frameworks / etc. Not just because it lowers switching costs ... but because it destroys the self-identification people used to feel with their tools.

Here’s what I’ve learned after 3 kids: - babies are pets, it’s like taking care of a hamster - 2 year olds and above are people, you just talk to them - 1 year olds are fast freaky little aliens with no reasoning and no sense of self-preservation, good luck.

A hand-drawn Venn diagram titled “Bubbles” with four overlapping circles labeled Beanie Babies, NFTs, AI, and Dot-com. Each circle includes phrases like “Gamble on plushies,” “Gamble on JPEGs,” “Gamble on LLMs,” and “Gamble on HTML.” Overlapping areas note shared traits such as “The products tend to have cutesy first names,” “Mostly in private markets,” “Good people got hurt,” “Genuinely important underlying technology,” and “This URL could be worth millions!” The center intersection reads: “Somebody got rich, but probably not you.” The overall tone is humorous and critical of speculative tech and collectible bubbles.

A child of mine, historically a selective eater, just downed his first-ever cheeseburger. After each bite he said “This is the best thing I’ve ever tasted.” As soon as it was gone he groaned “I never want one of those again.” yep, that’s the cheeseburger experience. Welcome to America, kid.

I just realized that Charles and Mary Lamb's famous children's book "Tales from Shakespeare" was published closer to the writing of Shakespeare's actual plays than to the present day.

My old Toyota Sienna just transported two fairly large couches across town without so much as needing to have the back hatch tied open. I could easily stuff a queen mattress AND box spring in the back of my 2001 Ford Windstar. Minivans are hilariously useful, no home should be without one.

I feel like the biggest takeaway from the latest AWS outage is that there’s simply no architecting around them at this point. Even if you are 100% redundant/multi-whatever, your vendors and customers are certainly not. Order volume is dropping no matter what you do. We’re all in this together.

I’m a pretty diehard Tigers fan but I have to admit that a Mariners-Blue Jays ALCS would be insane. I’ve been to Blue Jays games in Seattle before. The crowd is 65% Canadians who sneak down from Vancouver. That playoff atmosphere would be unlike any other.

“Please do not adjust your seat and ask a crew member for assistance” is a grammatically ambiguous instruction. So you want me to do neither of those things? Or I can adjust as long as I don’t ask? Or I can ask if I don’t adjust? Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks this every time I fly
