Fresno in the news again, let's see... huh, actually not as bad as I was expecting! Everyone (except the ICE thug ofc) seems to have behaved reasonably under the circumstances, even the cop?

The ICE agent was passed out drunk on the old guy's lawn, and was woken up by him and his daughter. The ICE agent attacked the guy's daughter when she protected her dad, so the dad got out his gun and shot him, then the daughter called her cop boyfriend (who cuffed the agent) and also an ambulance.

Notably, only *one* out of 51 model members (~2%) shows a drier-than-average winter in CA. So the odds of a dry winter, while still not zero, are *very* low--likely as low as we are ever going to see looking forward from any October. Again, this is extraordinary.

This kind of outlook is one reason why California's pre-emptive emergency declaration, I think, is justified. Disaster is not guaranteed! But with a forecast like this, it is hard to image ever having a clearer advanced warning of a potentially difficult winter ahead in CA.

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Every time some pundit claims that no one would work if their basic needs were met, I think about how, after he retired, my dad would just show up at estate sales with his truck and offer to help folks take their furniture home because he just wanted to keep busy and be around people.

Still, it's extremely difficult to predict how tech will interact with arts businesses Take US novel sales, which had been declining for decades up to 2020. Would anyone have anticipated that short-form video apps like TikTok would reverse this trend and send book sales soaring?

Kingfisher 🪶 🐡
Photo of a small painting being held by a hand for scale with a small paintbrush visible resting on the table behind it. The painting is of a female belted kingfisher, a dark blue and white bird with a long pointed beak evolved for catching fish. This bird has the belt of orange-red feathers which gives it its name and indicates it's a female. The painting is soft and a little dreamy with an out of focus grey-blue background.

One aspect of being an adult is realizing that big toys have to be maintained, and knowing that fact recontextualizes the desire for the big toy. If I have a sudden desire for a deeply impractical sports car, I'll rent one for a week, which is enough time to enjoy it without any further obligation.
