In May of 1940 there was a mass panic in Britain - stirred up by the tabloid press - about 'fighting aged men' who had come to Britain as 'refugees' posing a threat to the women and children of this country - and essentially forming a 'fifth column' that could, at any moment rise up against everyone

Good. And you should correct people. But I wished to make the point that a lot of the number of ‘resettled’ refugees were under the Ukraine scheme (which actually was a safe route) and was used by the govt to say ‘we have a proud history etc’ when they’d closed (pretty much) all the other routes
110
Zofia Duszynska @duszdemon.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
Okay you win. It’s open. But it’s not a resettlement scheme anymore. No resettlement scheme has ever been based on 18 months LTR. Resettlement is about safety and certainty and actual settlement. 18 month renewable grants are not this. They’re actually designed to stop resettlement
100
Zofia Duszynska @duszdemon.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
Perhaps the Homes for Ukraine scheme isn’t technically closed but from 2024 Ukrainians can’t apply for more than 18 mths LTR (with the idea it would be wound down by this year) but the others routes are closed
100
Zofia Duszynska @duszdemon.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
And important to stress - which the Guardian doesn’t- that resettlement numbers are down because routes were all closed inc the Ukrainian route which made up most of the numbers. We haven’t had proper resettlement routes for years. And need them.

Have you found yourself in the position of having a Reform councillor?

Here’s how you can help your brand new councillor settle into local government properly: email them this week with an actual council problem to solve.

Got rubbish piling up? Email them.

Bus vanished from existence? Email them.

Streetlights dead? Email them.

Care package delayed? Email them.

Pavement like the Somme? Email them.

Send them in by the hundred. Make sure they’re made very clear on what their job is.

Being a councillor is not standing in front of the Union flag shouting about dinghies on GB News. It’s reading committee papers at midnight, attending meetings nobody enjoys, holding surgeries in church halls, and dealing with the endlessly glamorous world of drains, social care budgets and recycling disputes.

Welcome to local government.

The boats are in Kent. The bins are in your ward.

The email address for your ward councillor can be found on your local council website as soon as it’s updated.

Feel free to copy and paste to share wider.

Reform is a protest party. A protest against decency, integrity, kindness, expertise, and progress. It's a party of pettiness and hate, and it is made up of petty and hateful people from the grassroots to the very top. What it doesn't have is competence. So good luck with the bins and potholes.

/2 and if no10 said no need for vetting but FCDO insisted and so vetting done but the result was iffy, why didn’t they crow about it to no10? And if OR says yes there was pressure from no10 (but always is) but that didn’t affect this decision because I’m incorruptible, what’s the real issue?

I watched the Foreign Affairs Cttee this morning. And I’m confused. If PM did not actually fail the vetting as it can’t be pass/fail and UKSV said he’s a borderline but we can mitigate (OR’s evidence) then why is everyone in trouble for not disclosing that he failed? Who said he did? #mandelson
