a lot of people are replying with 'what are you going to do about it,' and while every level of government could do more, the powers the *DC City Council* has in this situation are comparatively limited. This isn't just voter intimidation, but an argument for statehood for the District of Columbia.

Day one of NYCCC down! Great day, had a great panel, Neil Newbon is a riot. Also, y’ever have one of those moments when you think “I made choices in my life that brought me HERE?” Having someone saying “Ursula! This is your conscience! Do it!” in the voice of Astarion was not on my life bingo card.

Far too many people simply hate children for existing
Neighbor blasts an ultrasonic device audible and painful only to children whenever they pass on the public sidewalk.

Was riding bikes with my daughter and a friend to school this morning. We passed a house and they both started yelling, "Ow! It hurts my ears." Really strange, right? Then I hear a voice play through a speaker who says, "If it hurts your ears, ride your bikes somewhere else!"

Now I'm angry. Literally doing nothing but riding bikes to school, probably one of the most wholesome activities a person could imagine, and...I can't even get my brain around it.

It's apparently not loud, but it is tuned to a frequency higher than I can hear. If it's low enough for my children to hear it, it's going to be almost useless as an animal deterrent. It is specifically designed to cause pain to humans and serves no other purpose.

How is this legal?

Car crashes are violent. Removing life saving infrastructure to score political points is going to result in people being killed in violent car crashes. Don't tell us not to discuss violence, when each and everyone of us has lost friends and family members to traffic violence.

NIMBYs in my town love to scream, "Where's the parking!!!" whenever new housing or mixed use is proposed downtown. The parking is literally everywhere. It's never full. It's all free. You may have to walk a few hundred feet though and that's not allowed.

Yeah, and I think that lack of imagination is the result of motonormativity. And I do think another factor here is the whole idea that promoting active transportation is viewed as an attack on drivers. So that's why they lash out in these weird ways.

I feel like at least a small part of the lashing out is because they *know* that they can do a lot of stuff they do with a car via bike, and that makes them upset and defensive about the fact that you've correctly pointed out that they could do better and are too lazy to do so.

I'm always struck by how biking and route planning has made me a better navigator overall, including when driving. I spend a lot of time both poring over maps and exploring while on my bike, which has helped hone my sense of direction, but also my ability to interpret maps.

This is simply not true. The Seattle Library is 22 years old and will not need to replace all 10,000 windows in the next 20 years. The downtown office towers from the 1960s-1980s have not had full glass replacements and modern glass curtain wall systems are designed to last even longer

"But the handicapped need cars!" No, what they need are options in mobility. The tech exists to enable their freedom of independent mobility, but almost always what is lacking is the enabling infrastructure. Bike lanes and quality sidewalks serve everyone.

It's quite possible to do all these things, and also, not everyone has to or wants to go car-free. Simply replacing some car trips with bike trips is a step in the right direction. This all-or-nothing framing from anti-bike people is such bad faith bullshit.

I'll leave this guy's mentions alone but it is interesting how if an individual cyclist does something stupid all cyclists become responsible for it, but if an individual driver does something stupid it's just the one irresponsible motorist and doesn't indict all motorists.
RIP my mentions, but: To the biker who flew down the bike lane and nearly crashed into my daughters as they were exiting a school bus with its lights on yesterday -- you realize that this is why bikers don't always have the most sympathetic reputation, right?

If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for 30 days because they get infections and they don't have upper body strength. I mean some do, but they're relatively rare.

"On the other hand, men are basically little piglets, you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, it doesn't matter, you know. These things are very real.

"On the other hand, if combat means being on an aegis-class cruiser managing the computer controls for 12 ships and their rockets, a female may again be dramatically better than a male who gets very, very frustrated sitting in a chair all the time because males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes.
