Seen theories running from men being deported driving construction losses to COVID disparities ending as women return to work but it seems pretty clear to me that this is bc men don't like taking care of people and most jobs rn are in elder/child care, healthcare, and services.

Wow, that was just west of Fallen Leaf Lake, maybe just a couple miles from my parents' house. No wonder they jumped up at 3 am! My Dad said he thought someone ran a vehicle into the house. Which says a lot about how frequently that happens in this country, that his brain would go there. 😟🤷🏻‍♀️

Dark thread. Since we watched Musk literally push a "protect the Boers" button in real time with Grok, we now know people or companies could theoretically pay their way into putting a thumb on the scale for Grok/Claude/ChatGPT. This is why the AI stans want you to believe it's thinking

As much as I hate to say it, it seems many Title IX offices are there to protect the University, not the victim. I saw this happen to a close friend in grad school. She (and the multiple other victimized grad students) were failed at every level. The successful professor got to remain successful.

I was co-Chair of my university's Take Back the Night for two years. That was 25 years ago. And not only have things not gotten better on college campuses, they've gotten worse. Thanks somewhat to the internet but mostly the current social and political climate.

It's not the "Cornell 7." It is the Cornell 50, or however many are in that group chat. Their silence is complicity. Essays for five of the seven. Essays. Essays are what you get assigned the first time you plagiarize something, or use AI when it was forbidden.

617 days into his 2nd term, Trump's Department of Transportation has *still* not approved a single new transit project for full funding. The problems I highlighted in March—how this lack of funding only makes projects cost more & delays completion—have only worsened www.urban.org/urban-wire/r...
There have been no approvals for new transit projects in the entire 2nd Trump Administration. This graph, produced in March 2026, remains accurate now, in September 2026.

This is galaxy brain level car brain to frame this about anything but road rage. Someone desparate to use a toilet at a closed store will use a shrub outside, they won't crash their car into a store to reach the bathroom. FFS. (*unless it is a story about dementia, but the car is still the weapon)

Example eleventy-billion why we should require the humanities in school. What are all the best legends and myths and novels throughout time but stories about how the main character is actually supported and taught and empowered by the characters around them? That those characters aren't just "cogs"?

Art is already democratic. Anyone can do it. What AI does is make it EASY. And fast. And unfortunately unless you are a rare virtuoso, getting good at art is neither easy nor fast. (and obviously not original, if you are using AI.)

This is a good illustration of why "distracted" is a bit of a euphemism. Distraction means you aren't paying your full attention. But we lose all situational awareness when scrolling our phones, and we know from studies of pilots, it doesn't come back that quickly even in an emergency.

Does anyone know why #DiabloCanyon (the nuclear power plant) got evacuated today around 5 pm? I can't find any info anywhere, but I was there at Avila Beach and an officer told me that was what was happening. Just a drill? No sirens obviously, and they didn't clear the beach.

Uh, it's actually extremely easy to prove otherwise? Urban consumption is a minuscule fraction of overall water usage in this country. Look to the agricultural sector if you want to see where all our water is going.

"They want us to panic, instead of seriously deliberating at the polls, in community meetings and in Congress. Panic is chaos without direction, affect set free from the discipline of curiosity, debate and accountability." It is always about power. Understanding that makes so many things make sense

I just keep coming back to this fundamental mismatch: Some people think the point is Content, just more Content, endless Content to be mindlessly swiped through and consumed on 2x speed. Rather than art, creation, emotion, and shared humanity.

this from @ftrain.com is terrific, unsurprisingly, and I think this sentence actually understates the issue; it's not just that the big labs are in a hurry, it's that they don't see producing useful and well-documented tools for using these models as an important part of what they're doing
I don’t blame the coders for this, or even the bosses. I blame the big A.I. companies, who are in such a hurry that they often release new versions of their models and tools without manuals or even clear YouTube tutorials.

If AI is going to kill us all within ten years, it'll be because they fired all the food safety inspectors and water treatment plant operators and replaced them with automated agents trained on MAHA nonsense. The "AI-pocalypse" will be much grosser, slower, and more painful than people envision.

It isn't hard, actually, if all cars had interlock devices. All of us sober drivers could deal with a couple extra minutes delay each time we start a drive, so that drunk and buzzed driving could be significantly reduced.

the fact that the NTSB is conducting a federal safety investigation of the helicopter crash, but nobody is going to do anything about the original deadly car crash, really shows just how few fucks our country gives about every day traffic violence that kills 40k people every year

Right, but WHY? Do we need aerial views of crashes, or just traffic congestion generally, mostly so news orgs can report on the effect on drivers? Was this because we were trying to get people to re-route? Or is it more sensationalism driven, or ?

thanks. yeah, that's as far as I could find, although that page doesn't load well on mobile for me. But I couldn't find normal timetables so I could see when those lines actually come through the transit center.
A screenshot of the San Luis Obispo, CA public transit system website shows tiny images and print, not optimized for mobile viewing, despite the fact that most people would be trying to find their way using their phone.

oh my god. That's horrific. Why the hell do we need aerial news coverage of traffic or traffic crashes anyway? Of course now I'm wondering about the origin of the "eye in the sky" thing.

Anyone got a couple minutes to spare that can help me out? SLO Transit has abandoned their app and are using Transit as the official app (although maybe you need to pay for the Royale?). The website doesn't load well on my phone. Is there any easy place to find timetables? Or what lines pass through
