Pentecost is when we mark the birth of the Church and the beginning of its mission to the world. 🔥🕊️ Today we reflect on the moment when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ apostles and followers, as recorded in Acts 2. 📍 St Lawrence's Church, Evesham/Julian P Guffogg
This image shows a detailed stained glass window featuring a vibrant depiction of biblical scenes, including the Holy Spirit represented as a dove at the top centre. The window is divided into three main panels, each with figures in robes with halos, engaged in what appears to be a religious gathering. The intricate designs incorporate symbolic Christian imagery and ornate patterns, framed by dark stone.

I’ve been reading a lot about the end of the Roman republic recently, and the slide of that empire into imperial monarchy. The stamping of the leader’s face on coins, colossal statues and a reworking of the forum. But even Augustus didn’t build himself a ballroom-fortress.

None of the Iran War's stated strategic objectives have been achieved. Highly repressive regime still in Tehran, nuclear program still intact, missiles & drones still launching. And US now suddenly pausing effort to re-open Hormuz-- a problem that did not exist before the war. It's mind-boggling.

On Thomas (John 20): Recognition by scars is a trope in antiquity, as when the much older and changed Odysseus, returning from his wars and wanderings, is recognized by his old nurse (Odyssey, 19.353-56). Yet there is no comparable elapse of time here; so why emphasize the marks of crucifixion? 1/5

The salient issue of the war (Iran's uranium stockpile) remains unresolved after 40 days of conflict. Extremely unlikely that Iran surrenders it. If Trump is determined to secure it, he'll have to order a highly risky operation to capture it, which could plunge Iran/US and the region back into war.

I know the passion narratives are difficult and the problem of anti-Judaism should be addressed. I don't think Episcopalians need more excuses to avoid difficult biblical texts. We need more and better teaching and study, not hermeneutics of excision and deflection, in Holy Week and otherwise.

A PRAYER FOR MOTHERING SUNDAY
Loving God,
Thank you for mothers and children
and for all the joy of family life.
Be with those who are grieving
because they have no mother;
Be close to those who are struggling
because they have no children;
Be near to those who are sad
because they are far apart from those they love.
Let your love be present in every home,
And help your church to have eyes to see
and ears to hear the needs of all who come.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
