Fellow academics, if you are an external examiner for any course at Brighton (I have been), can I urge you to tell them you will quit prior to the June boards unless the University withdraw their notice that they are derecognising the UCU, and not to take any position if they come up.

I'm no demographer nor a criminologist, but I reckon that the Herald probably has Auckland's murder rate wrong here. I reckon it's probably lower than 3.6 per person.

If the government weren't cowards, they would turn the massive overreach of terror legislation to good by clearly and unequivocally stating that anyone engaging in or encouraging attacks on RNLI volunteers will be tried as a terrorist. Because that's exactly what they are.

The most incredible part of this undercover reporting isn't the blasé attitude that Reform has to political funding laws, or the blatant manipulation of the press. We already knew they are criminals. It's that it contains a report of Farage actually being in Clacton.

Opinion: Postdocs aren't burger flippers, because if they were they'd be treated better. Opinion: If your mentorship is disrupted by unionisation, you're probably a bad mentor. Opinion: It is actually possible to advance science without being exploitative.

I got an ARC of "The wolf that chews rocks", the latest book by @russincheshire.bsky.social - you too can get a review copy through the simple steps of completing a request after using your time machine to go back a week. My review follows (from memory as I CBA taking notes, so accuracy optional) 🧵

I sat down after lunch today, intending to read a couple of chapters of my ARC. I have read half of it, and am only stopping because I am going out to meet folk for tea. Russ is as entertaining and engaging when his humour and clever phrasing is lovingly bemused as when it is vitriolic. Review soon!

I want companies to understand that when I see an AI flier, my brain instantly deletes it. I don't think, "Ooh, I should go to this event!" I rush past it like it's a pile of dog poop. Same for ads with AI models. I assume that if your marketing is cheap garbage, so is your product.

The discourse on this seems to miss the optimal option for non-rich people. Take the gamble but delay it until you have auctioned a 50/50 chance of £1m to the highest bidder. You keep well over £50k regardless.

The first catfish was created in a lab in 1896 when Dr Moreau and colleagues crossbred a domestic cat with an Atlantic cod. Although widely criticised at the time for the ethical breaches involved in this experiment, Moreau was posthumously awarded a Nobel prize after an intervention by Donald Trump

I mean, sure it's an unworkable system that will disrupt children's lives, make it impossible for them to legally access such dangerous materials as mathematics videos on YouTube, and fails to deal with the actual problem, but have you considered it might stop some of them realising they're trans?

So how long before we see Labour MPs defecting to the Greens? If it does happen, I also predict that Polanski will welcome the actual socialists who correctly surmise Labour is no longer their natural home, but will tell the careerists to sod off.

I'm absolutely delighted to see the good folk of Gorton and Denton elect the candidate who actually gives a damn about them with a huge majority. I have previously said Labour needs to stop courting the fash vote and abandoning their core. I'm rethinking that in the light of this result...
