Utterly incoherent message from the UAW here, saying the American autoworkers don't support escalation against Canada except they DO support... auto and heavy truck tariffs. uaw.org/uaw-presiden...
The UAW rejects any escalation on Canada, a country with strong unions and labor standards. If we’re going to increase tariffs anywhere, it should be on countries where automakers continue to offshore jobs because they can pay workers $3 an hour, force them to work in unsafe conditions, and crack down on independent unions.

Here at the UAW, we are fighting to end the free trade disaster. Free trade pits workers against each other across borders and is fueled by corporate greed. That’s why we will always support strategic tariffs, including the 232 tariffs on auto and heavy truck. Tariffs work, but only if they are deployed intentionally to protect workers and grow our manufacturing communities.

It’s time to permanently end offshoring and the race to the bottom. We need well-designed tariffs, and a comprehensive rewrite of the USMCA and other bad trade deals.

The end of reading. Adults read more than ever, but it's short and shallow texts (like this post, alas) rather than long-form text. It's worse in the US, but I imagine it's just a preview of how things are headed for the rest of us 🎁🔗 www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Optimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

Does the brain actively predict the next word? Or is it just an artifact of how context-free meanings of previous words naturally anticipate those of upcoming words?

Proposal: two peer reviews of a manuscript is almost always enough. As reviewer: I'm sick of reluctantly agreeing to review a paper only to find out later I'm one of FOUR reviewers. This is a massive waste of resources at a time when it gets harder and harder to get people to agree to review.

You're boiling eggs wrong, apparently. www.nature.com/articles/s44...
The best way to cook eggs is "periodic boiling". From the article, "periodic eggs were placed alternatively in boiling water (Th = 100 °C) for th = 2 min and water at Tc = 30 °C for tc = 2 min, for a total cooking time of 32 minutes, which corresponds to the repetition of the hot and cold cycles for a total of N = 8 times. In the case of periodic eggs, a bowl filled with water kept at 30 °C was used for the cold cooking cycle."
