30 years after her seminal #StatisticalLearning paper, @jennysaffran.bsky.social is opening our #IASL26 conference @bcbl.bsky.social. What do we now know and what are the longstanding questions that are still of great interest? #StatLearnBCBL

Whereas our meta-analysis (doi.org/10.3917/anps...) indicates a significant but small association between #StatisticalLearning and #Language, the latest work by @haoyuzhou.bsky.social using 23 tasks and latent variable methods (a fishing net rather than rod!) reveals a stronger interconnection.

Our #IASL26 conference on statistical learning aims to bring together scientists from different disciplines who study how humans👨‍👧🧑‍🦳, as well as other species 🐒🦜 and systems 🤖🔠, learn regularities. ↖️🔍🔎↗️ If your work touches on this theme from any angle, we would love to receive your abstract!

🗓️💬 Delighted to be invited as a keynote alongside @valentinabambini.bsky.social for the upcoming #PsycholinguisticsInFlanders (PiF) meeting — renamed #PsycholinguisticsInPavia (PiP) for a 🔆 edition! 🧑‍🎓➰A full-circle moment, as PiF was the very first academic conference I attended as a MA student.

Very much enjoying #IndiREAD workshop on #IndividualDifferences in #Reading! While individual differences have brought my lab both excitement and headaches in recent years, I liked the optimistic take of @cuiding.bsky.social.

A systematic evaluation of Dutch large language models’ surprisal estimates in sentence, paragraph and book reading
Reading is shaped not only by word length and frequency but also by how predictable a word is in context. Using Dutch language models, researchers show that smaller models often predict reading times ...
