I'm just baffled that this movie exists, and that it's a documentary not a comedy. When it cut to Nathan Fielder my head exploded. Finally, why isn't she blinking?

The equity excellence trade-off: A study of EDI in the Canada Research Chairs Program | Macdonald-Laurier Institute
The analysis reveals that EDI has actively weakened Canadian research and reduced overall academic performance at Canadian universities.

Their analysis also treats all Black, Indigenous and women CRCs as "equity hires". Like, their guiding assumption is all those individuals only got CRCs thanks to EDI principles.

But as others have noted: availability of federal research grants in Canada is already extremely challenging. An influx of new stars just puts more pressure on that system. So will Canadian research show any real growth from this? /3

Some institutions came out very well in this - clearly this was about attracting excellence. Selection process wasn't just an exercise in distributing allocations (which I how these things sometimes go in Canada) /2

Utterly incoherent message from the UAW here, saying the American autoworkers don't support escalation against Canada except they DO support... auto and heavy truck tariffs. uaw.org/uaw-presiden...
The UAW rejects any escalation on Canada, a country with strong unions and labor standards. If we’re going to increase tariffs anywhere, it should be on countries where automakers continue to offshore jobs because they can pay workers $3 an hour, force them to work in unsafe conditions, and crack down on independent unions.

Here at the UAW, we are fighting to end the free trade disaster. Free trade pits workers against each other across borders and is fueled by corporate greed. That’s why we will always support strategic tariffs, including the 232 tariffs on auto and heavy truck. Tariffs work, but only if they are deployed intentionally to protect workers and grow our manufacturing communities.

It’s time to permanently end offshoring and the race to the bottom. We need well-designed tariffs, and a comprehensive rewrite of the USMCA and other bad trade deals.

The end of reading. Adults read more than ever, but it's short and shallow texts (like this post, alas) rather than long-form text. It's worse in the US, but I imagine it's just a preview of how things are headed for the rest of us 🎁🔗 www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

The End of Reading Is Here
Optimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

Does the brain actively predict the next word? Or is it just an artifact of how context-free meanings of previous words naturally anticipate those of upcoming words?

If the information content of Rev 1 and 2 is really weak, then by all means invite 2 others. But most of the time, reviewers will agree on the critical stuff that directly bears on whether a manuscript should be published.

Marc Joanisse @drmarcj.bsky.social · 20/12/2025

Also, fellow action editors, while I have your attention: You don't need to hedge against people saying no by inviting 4+ reviewers all at once. Most invite systems allow you to designate alternate reviewers if your first invites are declined.

Marc Joanisse @drmarcj.bsky.social · 20/12/2025
As an action editor: the number of invites I have to send out to get even two people to say yes is at least 5 or 6. How many would have said yes if they weren't already burnt out from being Rev 3 or 4 on a bunch of other papers?
