The way people are talking about the current demolition of research funding and HE legitimacy reminds me of the early days of COVID when I (and others) said it would be at least six years before any normalcy. Rage, despondency, rejection…eventually voting for a dictator just to feel alive.

The bottom line with the proposed cuts to NSF is to cut the number of working scientists and disappear opportunities to train new scientists. This is a PROPOSED budget to Congress. Call your reps.

Last year for my birthday, I spent the day getting an MRI that two days later led to a diagnosis of breast cancer. This year, I’m trying to fly samples collected from 400 amazing participants in Uganda back home to the USA. Let’s see which birthday is more stressful 😂😭

One of the reasons for this class is to promote and practice Spanish as a valid language in academia. I realized tonight I didn't know how to translate "Syllabus", for example. Only ever used it in English, and even my wife, who is a native speaker and a professor, always uses the English word.

I love my neighbors. A guy a few doors down came to check on me after the police knocked on his door bc someone on the street triggered a life alert. He sent them to the lady two doors down bc she’s fragile but also came to check on me bc he knew I had had health issues this year.

A day early but a reflection on the past 9 months and the next 3: WOW. I need a nap. This year has included my dad almost dying twice, my cancer diagnosis, major surgery, 3 months of chemotherapy plus recovery, multiple small grant awards and major grant applications/rejections.
