Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 1hThis thought brought to you by the first time I watched the film, on a screener pre-Sundance, with a Beloved Character Actor who was very stoned, leading me to have to pause and recap the film every five or ten minutes. Very meta way to experience it. 0211

Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hA festival screening and a commercial release are so obviously different things that I'm confused why it's even debatable. 020

Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hBut because IMDb's data gets scraped by so many other apps, it's a larger issue. I run a Plex server, and its release date info makes me want to scream. 010
Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hIf it got a commercial release somewhere, that's the release date. At that point, I'll refer specifically to a US release date. SUPERMAN II is a 1980 film, but a 1981 US release. 010
Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hIf something is genuinely complicated like WANDA, or if it never gets a release past festivals, there should be a way to clearly indicate that. This current system is infuriating for myriad reasons. 110
Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hBut 2/3 of the Internet now just writes EVIL DEAD (1981) as a matter of fact because of this. It seems super-prevalent now with movies that premiere at Toronto or Venice but that get zero commercial release until the following year. 000
Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hThat is a legitimate oddity. 99% of the time, it's not that complicated. Festival screenings are not releases, but IMDb and Wiki are a fucking mess because they consider them the "release date." I point to EVIL DEAD as a good example of how wrong they can be. It is not, in any way, a 1981 film. 160
Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 6hOnce again, Wikipedia, this is a 2027 film. It is not being released commercially until February 2027. I think it's very cool Beyond Fest was able to show it, but that still does not make it a 2026 film. 4292

Drew McWeeny @drewmcweeny.com · 27/09/2026At least part of it is the trailers. The film might be great, but the trailers were both incoherent and obnoxious. The final one felt like it was nine minutes long. The reviews are good, but not everyone reads reviews, and the studio did not put their best foot forward. 3241
