Tributes and obituaries will be written for him, the teacher and scholar. But none of that captures what matters – about who he was, and what he meant. Yannis, I’m so sorry I wasn’t in touch more. I sure could use that hand on my shoulder now - but we're all better for having known you.

In a way I feel like this grief isn’t mine, that I haven’t earned it. I feel like it should be private, quiet, and kept for those who were closer more recently. But the idea that I won’t ever have a chance to sit across from him, share a drink, and hear his laugh hits quite hard.

Over the years I saw him do the equivalent for so many people. Just a kind word, a comforting touch, a shared joke, an insightful poke to get the mind moving. Whatever someone needed to get them over the hump, Yannis knew it and he shared it. He didn’t hoard any of it. He gave of himself.

My admission left a silence between us for what felt like uncountable seconds. We stared out over the edge of the city that had been, at the sunrise. And Yannis put his hand on my shoulder and told me I’d be fine. I don’t know why, but I believed him. “λoιπον…” he said, and we turned back to work.

We were engaged in a debate we’d had for several seasons at that point, about how much to survey, how much to collect, and how to be rigorous without killing ourselves in the process. Somehow the conversation had moved from field methods to my anxieties about finishing my PhD.

I remember one incident in particular when we were surveying at Sikyon. It was so hot – the sort of August hot that means you can’t take a full breath – and we were on site, staring over the edge of the plateau, at the crack of dawn.

He really came alive at dinners, when he could tell witty anecdotes, crack jokes, and ensure everyone’s glass was topped up. He really liked dusting for some reason. He would say “λoιπον” when he wanted to move the conversation on.

Yannis was so patient, and kind, but not in a cloying way. He was very funny, and somehow managed to conduct ground-breaking fieldwork while hating the heat and early starts.

To me he was funny and deeply kind – like a bottomless well that nourishes communities. The sort of kind that you take for granted, like turning the tap will lead to water. You don’t think about what sits behind that marvel of reliable nourishment, but when it’s gone, ho boy.

I’m sure lots of tributes will pour in to him, the inimitable Yannis Lolos. He was a great archaeologist and a fantastic teacher. But in many ways those are the least important things about him.

I learned late last week that my friend died. There was a good decade there where we had a very close friendship, in that way that archaeology gives you, but lately we had drifted: we both had careers, and families, and lived in different countries. #archaeology #Greece #Sikyon

Yes, we have gone from the idea that central university management is there to support teaching and research to the idea that teaching and research are there to support ‘the university’. We must bring in more money, and not cost so much in doing it.

The heritage sector generates £15 billion for the economy. If we cut archaeology as a subject, we lose the engine that helps generate it. We also lose our knowledge of past societies. We lose any grasp of who we are, who we’ve been, and who we might yet be.

Summary
This chapter explores the written and material evidence for civilian quartering of Roman troops in late antiquity. The civic duties to extend hospitium or hospitalitas are reconstructed from the Republic until the late Roman Empire, focusing on the period between the fourth century ce and mid-sixth century ce. By looking at the literary evidence for housing troops in civilian homes penned in the Republic and early Principate, the convention of using moralizing rhetoric to describe soldiers quartered in cities is established. This classicizing rhetoric is then used to reframe later allegations concerning the effects of Constantine’s alleged movement of frontier troops into cities. This reconsideration of the extant evidence for Roman troop quartering questions and amends how we should write the lived experiences of civilians living in late Roman cities.
