... but there actually is a secret third option: we could agree to no longer treat "continued astronomical rates of AI investment" as an unimpeachable good, and implement regulatory -- as opposed to monetary -- policy that slows AI investment rates.

This is exactly the same grotesque moral logic as Sam Altman's "the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology." We have choices. We don't have to accept punishing interest rates (or anything else) in exchange for AI-led growth.
“The problem for the Fed is that there is usually a built-in correction mechanism in the U.S. economy in which interest rates rise and at some point, the rate-sensitive parts of the economy, led by housing, slow down hard, and that then propagates to the rest of the economy,” said Ajay Rajadhyaksha, global chairman of research at Barclays.

“But if a large part of the economy is just less rate sensitive and that is what is pushing the economy to grow faster, then the Fed, unfortunately, has to hurt the part of the economy that is more rate sensitive.”

As Chris Rufo considers "the Indian question" and X users debate if it's woke to study for spelling bees, I'm reminded of this moment from 5+ years ago I included in my book. Even before the backlash to "CRT" and DEI, suburban white folks were complaining about South Asians outdoing their kids.
Being new to the story, the backlash was what I still didn't under-stand. The story Jones was telling didn't match West's description of a hostile Black Lives Matter takeover of the school district. I'd gone back and watched a video of the 2018 school board meeting when parents of Black children came forward with painful stories similar to the one I was hearing from Jones. Back then, people appeared to be listening to one another, and everyone seemed genuinely committed to addressing the problem. What had brought things to the point of backlash?
Jones began to offer up her theory. Over the course of two decades, she'd watched as Southlake's population had grown ever more diverse with an influx of high-achieving South Asian immigrants. Over time, she said, fewer and fewer white Carroll students were graduating at the top of their class.
"I think," Jones told me, "this has a lot to do with preservation, and I believe_"
Just then, I cut her off mid-sentence. Throughout our hour-long conversation, I'd been keeping an eye on an MSNBC live feed on a computer monitor in my home office. I was suddenly distracted by the images flashing across the screen."I don't know if you've noticed your TV," I told Jones, my voice shaking slightly. "The MAGA protesters just stormed the Capitol.
There's shooting in the Capitol right now."
At the urging of their president, people had come by the thousands to stop Congress from certifying the results of the presidential election.
Some were members of white supremacist extremist groups. Others you might have thought of as regular folks. A realtor from a wealthy Dallas suburb. A West Virginia state lawmaker. A retired New York City police officer. One man, a construction worker from Delaware, marched through the besieged U.S. Capitol with a Confederate battle flag slung over his shoulder.
I told Jones I had to get off the phone to help cover the attack. But first, she wanted to complete her thought about the demographic changes that she believed were driving the unrest in her adopted hometown.
*There's complaints now that the valedictorian and salutatorian are…no longer white," she told me. "That's really what's happening. They feel their children are being displaced."
Jones was, in effect, describing a hyper-local version of what's known as the Great Replacement Theory—a once-fringe belief by some on the far right that white Americans are being demographically, culturally, and politically replaced by non-white people through mass migration.
I couldn't say whether Jones's assessment was accurate; I'd only just started my reporting. But in time I would begin to realize that, at a certain level, the story I was pursuing in Southlake, and the one unfolding that day in Washington, were both part of the same long, messy
American narrative.
"T'll be in touch," I told Jones before hanging up.
Then I got to work.

Teacher curiosity goes, too, with constrained curriculum. AND, this stance has devalued teacher expertise by outsourcing it to 'standardized' and 'objective' tests. Root cause of so much that's wrong with education is the very test that purports to tell us students and schools are failing.

Oh, yeah, it’s a real thing. But, I’ve never had an issue until now. As long as you kinda keep an eye on your yarn and where you store it is on the dry side, you’ll be fine. It’s an issue that my storage is the laundry room, but it’s what I’ve got.

Thx. It was all in fabric sided boxes. It’s worked for 20 years. Now will be sealed plastic bags. The locking lids bins we’ve had ended up off gassing more than I’ve ever liked. So bags in totes.

When you see the third tiny moth in a week in your craft room (which is also the laundry room), it’s time for the year to take a trip to the freezer. Thankfully no evidence of bugs in this stash, but better safe than sorry. Btw, advice appreciated. Also, gift scarf finished! #knitting
A room with red carpet. There’s a fabric cutting mat covered with skeins of yarn in all the colors. A table has more chaotic heaps of yarn. And there are some plastic bags of yarn too. Open fabric sided containers sit to the side. This is a scrappy log cabin-ish scarf I finished in stockinette and double moss stitch in fall colors of heather green and green with a matching gold. It’s sitting on a grey fabric with old timey lettering.

I read the ending and I wanted to koolaid man through a wall!!
Screenshot of article which reads: To restore a functioning and
pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of
democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to
“fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response
to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success,
reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.Screenshot of article which reads: But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome.
When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev-
eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those
who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern
for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the
solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American his-
tory—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed
by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to
defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the
leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.
