Sagan’s been quoted plenty, and it’s a win when my teen is reading the book on his own and wants me to read the paragraph. “…when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues…” There’s an election coming.
Key paragraph of the first page of text come from Sagan’s Demon Haunted World.

But there's another reason: Science is more than a body of knowl-edge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time-when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

When you see the third tiny moth in a week in your craft room (which is also the laundry room), it’s time for the year to take a trip to the freezer. Thankfully no evidence of bugs in this stash, but better safe than sorry. Btw, advice appreciated. Also, gift scarf finished! #knitting
A room with red carpet. There’s a fabric cutting mat covered with skeins of yarn in all the colors. A table has more chaotic heaps of yarn. And there are some plastic bags of yarn too. Open fabric sided containers sit to the side. This is a scrappy log cabin-ish scarf I finished in stockinette and double moss stitch in fall colors of heather green and green with a matching gold. It’s sitting on a grey fabric with old timey lettering.

Saturday #knitting. There’s a red sparkle in the yarn that you can’t see on the photos, but is gorgeous. This is Turtle Lake by rhyFlower Knits. It’s one of my favorite patterns ever because it’s easy to memorize without being boring.

This is the Canvas page I have to delete from my class because it isn't objective and free of political bias as required of all Educator Preparation Programs in Texas. If my students don't learn from me about the policies that directly affect them, where will they learn it?
More on recent laws - optional

While you may just want to teach/coach/conduct/direct, it is always worth remembering that you are doing that in a much larger context that will always impact the way you're able to interact with the students in your care. If you're interested in following up more on the federal education policy context, you can explore the two links below.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act: Title 1 comes from the ESEA, as does so much else. This interactive timeline is full of info.

A Nation at Risk (PDF): This isn't that long. Note where you hear echoes of this language today, particularly in the media.

Texas also holds a unique position in education policy because of Bush's presidency and the textbook industry.

See this op-ed about how Texas influences textbook content nationwide. It is also worth noting that because of SB3 (which we'll discuss later in the semester), Texas is undergoing another social studies revision, so while the article is older, it's an example that history repeats itself.

That all said, technological advances in publishing mean that Texas' influence will decrease as it gets easier to change the literal printed material and as textbooks go online and multiple editions are easier to produce.

Texas has also led the push to remove books from classrooms and libraries, especially those featuring LGBTQ+ and African American stories.

The trend to share lists of books to challenge started in Texas with Rep. Matt Kraus in 2021. In 2022, Texas had banned more books. But HB900, passed in 2023 and requiring booksellers to label the sexual content of books, was found to be unconstitutional.

SB 12, passed in 2025, is a combination of "divisive concepts" laws--"anti-DEI" or "anti-woke" is language the media uses--from across the country and Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law, which purports to make it illegal for teachers to talk at all about gender identity and sexual orientation.

Those picture magazines and comic books, man, they're definitely to blame for all society's ills. Clay, D. (1957). Reading in College: Some Observations by an English Teacher on Reading in College. The Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, 32(3), 169-173.
Editor's note:
The booksellers tell us that they do not sell as many books as they once did. Is this situation a result of the increased costs of printing or a result of decreased interest in reading? Are more people substituting picture magazines and comic books for more intensive reading for self-improvement and entertainment? We don't profess to know the whole answer. Neither does the author. But he generalizes on the reading by high-school and college students and his comments are incisive. He is a teacher of English in the high school at Henryetta, Oklahoma.

#literacies folks, if you haven't heard, word is that NCTE is dissolving/absorbing CCCC. As a 20+ year member of NCTE, who has been doing intellectual freedom advocacy with the org since 2018, I wish I were shocked. www.facebook.com/melissa.iane...
Screenshot of a FB post from Melissa Ianetta from 5 hours ago on Thurs, July 7:

Since I was getting questions into the wee hours last night, here’s my statement: I, along with another CCCC officer was summoned to a 30-minute meeting with the Executive Director of NCTE and a couple of members of the leadership team. We were told CCCC would be dissolved and its membership absorbed into the NCTE College section. We were told we’d be appointed to the Task Force assigned to that work. We were told that due to the culture of CCCC, they thought we jeopardized their non-profit status. Since I did not sign up to butcher the organization, I resigned on the spot. I am no longer an officer of that organization and, if I can get them to give back the years of membership dues I paid in advance, I will not longer be a member. Maybe they are correct and y’all will just smoothly transition to NCTE, which will allow them to exert the greater control they desire while maintaining the CCCC revenue stream. But I won’t be there so I won’t know.
