I'd happily have lunch with a green anarchist or a radical feminist or a centrist technocrat or anyone who has a decent view of humanity but different visions, life experiences, or practical politics. Those aren't the views I'm expected to engage with to 'heal partisanship.' It's always the bigots.

THREAD. Did you know that Minneapolis police deployed 101 personnel to a 7-person vigil held one morning at Renee Good's memorial? The cops generated $1.92 million in overtime cash for themselves.

We have some very easy cases here that sidestep all the murky "rogue AI!" BS. The military bombed an Iranian school using targets selected by AI. Is the the AI's fault? Obviously not! Everyone involved in selecting that method for targeting committed war crimes.

If these are dangerous tools you get to face the consequences for using them! Oh, it just hacked into the local power grid. Great! Who hacked it? You did. Invent some monstrous system by hooking up your agents to every possible system in the world? Why did you do that, you fucking idiot

These preliminary discoveries do happen across particle physics, and sometimes they don't pan out. Maybe someone will find a subtle error that evaded the authors. But there are independent experiments that could confirm the result, or eventually rule it out. So now it's just a waiting game!

The graph that made me gasp a little. See that lonely point off to the right? That's the one! (The one to the left is a boring predicted sort of outlier)
A graph whose two axes are different timings that can distinguish types of events detected during the experiment. Out of a huge mass of points clumped together, there's a single point to the right, far below the clump

Preliminary but potentially huge result. One (1) potential dark matter particle apparently detected at the world's largest detector. Not in the most popular energy range for theorists but as you'd expect there are alternative theories that work fine! www.science.org/content/arti...

World’s biggest dark matter detector spots a single weird particle
It’s far too early to declare a discovery, physicists with the LZ detector say

Wait, the solution is to let manufacturers replace an annoying beep with an even more annoying ditty? There are two real solutions: allow the consumer to halt all noises, or keep the audio chip on a place where I can use a soldering iron

It sounded familiar but I definitely didn't remember hearing him speak. Looking at the schedule, it's because I noped out hard on that afternoon, probably in part because of Greenspan.

The point is right but "just in CA" refers to all American production and 80% of the entire world's almonds. Alfalfa is the real low value crop that uses near half the ag water.

In the past I never had much idea until the first unprocessed ballot report (which gets you almost the whole way there). Not up yet, usually 2+ days after the election? Some counties do report this data earlier so you get a sense. dp.electionresults.sos.ca.gov/unprocessed-...

In California, you can register to vote and immediately vote, right up to election day (today)! Look here to see which nearby voting center offers same-day registration. Everyone else: drop your ballots in an official box so they're counted in time. caearlyvoting.sos.ca.gov

Here's Political Tracker's own comparison to this point in 2022, when over 7 million voted. And strategic voting while waiting on polls may have pushed the vote late (it did for me). I'm not concerned about turnout.

This isn't really a consumer demand problem, so there's not a ton one can do as a shopper to help, BUT, maybe keep this in mind next time you're poking around for a new book. Ask for something queer or from one of the other communities being targeted.

NEW: Seattle might declare a civil emergency to help LGBTQ (mostly trans) people fleeing red states, so I looked for a Texas angle. An organizer told me that Texas is #1 among trans people looking to relocate: "The baseline hostility to their existence is unbearable." www.chron.com/culture/arti...

I once optimized a Python boggle solver, and one piece was constructing a sicko structure like this to fit in L2 cache. But that was the exception — mostly it was just algorithms. A factor of 3 here, 10 there, and eventually I could Monte Carlo the billions of boards I needed to improve my game.

Imagine getting this far without someone saying ... something to you. Affect of speech of course leads naturally to a better civil society. Douglas was civil too. Lots of people were civil. And thankfully the war was too.

Prop 14 was introduced by Republican Abel Maldonado solely as an attempt to keep his state Senate seat. It passed because voters liked the incoherent "fair elections" sound of it, and now we're stuck with it. Shutting out candidates wasn't even part of the conversation.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention. The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Fantastic and to me somewhat counterintuitive, but really illuminating discussion. I love that the retake option let you distinguish between lower stakes & possibly increased preparation.
