I love #StarTrek Enterprise so much my dog’s name is Archer. I regularly revisit the show; I finished a S3 rewatch last night. In honor of the show’s 25th birthday, here’s a pic of dog Archer & the text I sent my brother that time I saw human Archer aka Scott Bakula at my local supermarket.

USS Rio Grande, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE (1993)
Publicity still of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE's runabout USS Rio Grande.

Built by Tony Meininger and Brazil
Fabrications, the runabout filming miniature was 19.5 inches long from designs by Illustrators Jim Martin and Rick Sternbach who themselves based the general configuration of the ship on John Goodson's Executive Shuttlecraft from STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. According to Sternbach, the producers initially intended on using Goodson's existing model but ultimately reversed course: "My earliest drawings reflect the major structural elements of his ship, in particular the forward windows, side windows, and entry doors. These would be the first pieces 'frozen’ in the design process, since the cockpit set
had to be finished and filmed before the miniature was completed.”

NEW! You might think "Top 5 Coolest Character Names" is just a normal, everyday episode of TrekRanks. But this one goes off the rails early – to your benefit! Anyway, there are a lot of cool names in #StarTrek and we go through a ton of them in this fun episode! 🔊 www.trekranks.com/trekranks-podcast
Artwork for the 237th episode of TrekRanks featuring the "Top 5 Coolest Character Names." Images include the TrekRanks logo in the upper left corner and (from left to right) Nyota Uhura from the Kelvin Timeline and Third Remata'Klan from DS9's "Rocks and Shoals."

Across the middle from left to right are Klim Dokachin from TNG's "Unification," Brad Boimler's alter-ego Bucephalus Dagger from "Crisis Point II: Paradoxus," and Sirna Kolrami from TNG's "Peak Performance." They image below these is Jett Reno in Discovery's "Brother" with the words "Top 5 Coolest Character Names" highlighted in yellow.

Along the bottom are four images (from left to right), including Anjohl Tennan (actually Gul Dukat - yikes!), Rain Robinson (aka Sarah Silverman!), Kai Opaka and the amazing Tongo Rad from "The Way to Eden."

As always, to keep you guessing, remember that the episodes reflected in photos here include some choices that were featured in this episode of TrekRanks, some choices that were maybe mentioned in our "Secondary Systems" section of the show, and some choices that weren't mentioned at all.

Andor started 4 years ago today. And it managed to make me a fan all over again. Even a TIE Fighter becomes a formidable force there. A return to their roots, since the sound of the TIE is inspired by WW2 dive bombers, which had an artificially created siren sound. The aim was to terrify people.

The wormhole, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE (1993)
Publicity still of the mouth of the Bajoran wormhole.

An early example of CGI in STAR TREK, the wormhole was created by VFX house Rhythm & Hues. According to a 2012 DEEP SPACE NINE Gizmodo retrospective, the first computer generated object through the wormhole (in test footage) was a cow: "Back in 1993, it was often easier and cheaper to make things using miniatures because computer graphics weren’t quite there yet. But one effect in DEEP SPACE NINE that was computer generated was the wormhole, though the ships moving through were still models. To check the interior lighting conditions on an object passing through the wormhole, the effects company, Rhythm & Hues, needed a test sequence that would move a computer generated model through the path a ship would take. At the time they lacked any Federation spaceship in their library to use. Instead they combined two objects that they did have –- a cow and a biplane. “Aero-cow,” the cow with biplane wings, was the first thing through the wormhole."

Patrick Stewart as Locutus of Borg in "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II", STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1990)
Patrick Stewart as a newly assimilated Locutus in a Borg regeneration alcove.

Stewart said the discomfort of the Borg costume and makeup was an experience that helped inform Picard's state of mind: "The best part about Locutus was that I have something to reference, the drama Picard had to endure, the makeup process for me, which was extremely unpleasant and painful and unsettling. No experience is wasted."
