From Hunter S. Thompson’s ESPN page 2 column one week after 9/11.
We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."
Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history - which is no doubt true - but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a wartime economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.
That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I wrote about Los Angeles and violence. newrepublic.com/article/1963...
For Bass, it seemed, the problem was not that the LAPD was violently policing those protesting ICE raids; the problem was Trump's calling in the national guard to do the same thing. By this logic, the ICE raids, conducted with the support of myriad federal agencies, are a terrifying abuse of power that police should not collaborate in—but it's fine for them to collaborate by keeping protestors and witnesses away. The upside-down thinking goes even further: It's wrong for the National Guard to put down protests against the will of the governor and city officials, but it's fine for state and local law enforcement to do it, so long as state and local officials want them to. The line of reasoning is maddening, seemingly designed to scramble and demobilize support for the people of Los Angeles. Accept the terms of the debate, and you end up in a bizarre argument about how much violence from which armed agents of the law is acceptable.

I agree about the need @joshtpm.bsky.social names here: a docket in waiting, basically, that holds public evidence of wrongdoing by admin officials & Trump associates. The implied threat: that after a change of power or in Dem-controlled states, the files could find their way to prosecutors' hands.
"Here’s what I envision – a small group of researchers and lawyers, let’s call them the DOJ in Exile. This small office I’ve created pulls together all these stories and all those to come. My team orders them into things that are awful but simply not part of the criminal law, those that could prosecuted with creative but serious-minded uses of available statutes and those which appear to involve straightforward criminal conduct. Then they break them down into specific statutes. They name names. They can produce what amount to indictments in waiting. I could go through many more permutations here. But the concept and question is what would a real Justice Department be doing right now? Since it’s not a real Justice Department with the ability to compel testimony, make arrests and bring criminal charges we don’t have the need for secrecy. You can discuss and publicize what you’re finding."

"Needless to say my small team would be minuscule compared to the Public Integrity Section of the DOJ. But they could do quite a lot. And to be clear, I don’t envision going out and generating new facts. I imagine working primarily from credible published accounts of what has happened. There’s quite a lot you can learn by carefully sifting through publicly available information. A real investigation would need to validate and confirm these details in ways that would hold up in court. That’s fine. The point of the exercise is to provide an outline and a guide to probable, credible outcomes."

And yet Joe Rogan puts guests on who say "Vaccines aren't actually responsible for the reduction in infectious diseases.”
The image is a heatmap titled "Measles," showing measles cases across U.S. states from 1928 to 2003. States listed on the y-axis include Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The x-axis spans years from 1928 to 2003. A vertical line marks the introduction of the measles vaccine around 1963. The color scale at the bottom ranges from blue (0 cases) to red (4,000+ cases), with shades of green, yellow, and orange indicating intermediate values (1,000, 2,000, 3,000 cases). Before 1963, many states show frequent high case numbers (yellow to red), while after 1963, cases drop significantly, with mostly blue indicating near-zero cases.

Something that's been clear to me for some time is that a lot of progressive advocacy and politics has overindexed on finding just the right combination of words to say while ignoring the fact that no media ecosystem exists where people might actually hear you say them. New from @mmfa.bsky.social
Media Matters compiled a list of 418 popular online shows — podcasts, streams, and other long-form audio and video content regularly posted online — that were active during 2024, assessed ideological alignment, and found 320 online shows with an ideological bent (191 right-leaning and 129 left-leaning) that covered news and politics and/or hosted related guests.

Nine of the 10 online shows from our study with the largest total following across platforms were right-leaning, accounting for at least 197 million total followers and subscribers. These are the online shows of:

Joe Rogan: 39.9 million
Ben Shapiro: 25 million
Jordan Peterson: 23 million
Russell Brand: 22.5 million
Theo Von: 22.3 million
Charlie Kirk: 18.6 million
Nelk Boys’ Full Send Podcast: 16.7 million
Candace Owens: 15 million
Dr. Phil: 14.2 millionAcross streaming platforms including YouTube, Rumble, Twitch, Kick, and Spotify, the left-leaning online shows had at least 55.9 million total followers and subscribers — a figure which is dwarfed by the right-leaning online shows with at least 255.5 million.

This content is further amplified on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok — social media platforms where the programs or hosts post full streams, clips, and show links. Left-leaning online shows had at least 48 million followers across these platforms, while the right-leaning online shows had more than 225 million followers.

Of a cumulative 584.6 million followers and subscribers across all eight platforms, Media Matters found that right-leaning online shows accounted for roughly 82%, or 480.6 million — almost five times more than left-leaning shows’ nearly 104 million.

Left: How the New York Times covers a presidential administration silencing critics with threats of state violence Right: How the New York Times covers random trans people criticizing bigotry
Most elected Republicans are fully supportive of Mr. Trump and his agenda, and on issues like immigration some Democrats are moving in his direction, reflecting public opinion. Democrats were divided over the wisdom of the protest by Representative Al Green, Democrat of Texas, during Mr. Trump's address to Congress on Tuesday night.
But the lack of aggressive pushback from targets of Mr. Trump's retribution and policy agenda is striking if understandable in other cases.
