![[96] 6th June 1962. Back to work after 2 days’ sick. Don’t want to make waves while I’m still quite new. Plus of course since x and I got together it’s not like going into work, not really. Hard though, working at opposite ends of the building; me in the typing pool at the Abbey Road end, x right over the other side in the kitchens. We manage a moment here and there though. The tape library, that stationery store, we find somewhere to steal a minute or two most days. Together. This evening it was the storeroom just over from Two. Mr Martin had a band in; I’d heard some of their session through the door earlier. x really down. Crying. Saying there’s no way it will ever work out for us. I was just about to say let’s stop then let’s just leave it there’s nothing either of us can do but just as I opened my mouth there was this burst of laughter from Two’s control room. PETE BEST: Then George Martin says to us ‘Is there anything you’re not happy with?’ He probably didn’t notice but we all tensed up a bit at this. You see we’d been pretty sure he’d ask something like this and the other three had been keen to have something to say back to him. Something funny, you know. For about three weeks before we went down for the recording session they’d been brainstorming lines. All the time backstage at gigs, in the van, even when we were just walking down the road. John, Paul and George just constantly trying to come up with a good, memorable line to put in if George Martin asked ‘Anything you’re not happy with?’ They went through so many ideas; at one point, John was going to say ‘Yes, your ears are too tall’. In the end I remember it was the day before we were due to travel down to London and I just said ‘What about ‘I don’t like your tie’?’ They all looked at me, then burst out laughing.
