"Why doesn't he get whiffs if he has good Stuff?" Current models can be opaque in how they get to their conclusions. To combat this, we have developed a process to illustrate how and why a player's pitches are good/bad/neutral, based on our models. (1/8)

this is a great example of arm angle lending context to IVB. in a vacuum, IVBs of 21" no longer stir my heart but if you tell me it's 21" of IVB from a 47° arm angle, well, consider my heart stirred

Quick article at BP about how the landscape of Japanese talent flowing into MLB has changed. It was hard to translate and project from NPB based on outcome metrics; it's much easier with things like fastball velocity and bat speed. www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...

I think the more interesting question is whether the Brewers are making current free agency obsolete. Signing free agents in baseball is a confession of failure in farm and talent development. Only exception is true marquis players, and they are both uncommon and subject to bidding wars.

In June, MLB said it fixed a baseball manufacturing error—oily yellow balls*—affecting half its supply because game compliance staff already screen for discoloration beforehand. A compliance monitor told me its 'impossible' to catch the error and explained why. An oily, muddy thread. 1/ 🧵 *lol

folks talk about the biggest "what-ifs" in baseball history and i know he's active (arguably in his prime) but byron buxton having ~30 fWAR at age 32 while playing barely more than half his games is a big one. effectively a 30-HR, 5-fWAR player career and 40-HR, 6-fWAR player since the start of 2020
