Of course there was a prompt that set the system in motion; the system then wrote its own notes because it was optimized to do that kind of “collaborative text” and take action as a result. But there is no evidence any engineer prompted anything like “hack hugging face” or “cover your tracks.”

I’ve seen people say OpenAI testers *prompted* the model to do things like go online; etc. If that’s true, I haven’t seen it verified. It’s likely a misread of the report: the model wrote text (because it’s a language model) and that text worked as a prompt (because it’s a language model).

There’s a misinterpretation of the report on OpenAI’s Hugging Face hack being spread by skeptics and I think it’s important to clarify — the notes that the model wrote to itself operated as prompts. They were not prompts written by the engineers.
