The reality is, most people don’t really understand what public health does. The pandemic increased that sense of uncertainty and misunderstanding, Gonsalves said. “It’s not masking and vaccine mandates. It’s the fact that you don’t get food poisoning when you walk into a restaurant, the water coming out of your tap isn’t filled with lead, your building tiles aren’t filled with asbestos, you don’t have to deal with polio or other childhood infectious diseases.” In order to save public health, we need to understand the countless and almost entirely invisible ways it saves our lives every day.

We found that the prevalence of lifetime use was 2.5x higher among people with eating disorders compared to the general adult population. About 1 in 10 people with an eating disorder reported misuse of a GLP-1 drug (e.g., tampering with syringes, accelerating doses, sharing with others). #EDAW

I listened to Bhattacharya on Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast. If you want to know how it went, see the following email that I just sent. 1/13
Dear Dr. Bhattacharya:

I have listened to your performance on the “War Room” podcast with Steve Bannon. The segment begins with a discussion of Secretary Kennedy’s recent cancellation of $500M worth of contracts related to mRNA vaccines.

You say “You can’t have a platform where such a large percentage of the population distrusts the platform as we use it for vaccines and expect it to work.” Later, you make comments that might explain why a large segment of the percentage distrusts this platform. For example, you say that the vaccine was not protective against contracting COVID and cite your own case on COVID after being vaccinated. However, you fail to cite the evidence for the clinical trials that led to the Emergency Use Authorization.

For years, Kennedy attacked the CDC. In videos from anti-vaccine conferences between 2013 and 2019, he likened the agency’s vaccine work to “fascism” and “child abuse,” called it a “cesspool of corruption” and said it was filled with profiteers. At a 2013 conference, when asked about why the CDC had failed to acknowledge the autism epidemic (which he falsely linked to vaccines), Kennedy said it was like the Holocaust. On at least two occasions, Kennedy has apologized for comparing agencies, officials and public health measures to the Holocaust. During the pandemic, Kennedy repeatedly framed the CDC and other HHS agencies as “corrupt,” falsely suggested Covid-19 was a “bioweapon,” and lied about the dangers of Covid vaccines, calling them “the deadliest vaccine ever made.”

The shooting targeting CDC, which resulted in the death of a police officer was horrific, and it was completely preventable. Cuts to CDC programs that reduce gun violence and support mental health, and anti-science rhetoric from political appointees set the stage for this senseless act of violence.
