Finding a "face neuron" in an ANN doesn't mean it encodes faces like we do. 🧵 In my first project with @apurvaratan.bsky.social, we show that category selectivity in ANNs ≠ category selectivity in brains. Details in thread + preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Feedback or questions welcome!

For example, in a perceptual experiment with two alternatives, you can have 4 levels of difficulty and 4 priors, creating a total of 16 unique conditions. This creates a stronger test by making it harder to design a likelihood that fits the data.
000
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
We actually don't require that -- adopting the correct likelihood is probably too restrictive in most cases. In practice, adjudicating between explicit-Bayes and non-explicit-Bayes models is hard but can be done if an experiment has enough conditions.
100
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Ultimately, the broader Bayesian program will stand regardless of whether the explicit-Bayes hypothesis is supported or falsified. But if it is broadly falsified, this would help constrain how Bayesian models are interpreted.
150
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Finally, we super briefly review the literature of explicit-Bayes models in the context of confidence judgments. While the jury is out, the evidence seems to tilt against the explicit-Bayes models in this context.
110
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Of course, there are many models that are Bayesian at the computational level but do not explicitly use Bayes' rule, so these are not "explicit-Bayes" models. We don't mean to re-categorize these models but to be clear about their algorithmic nature.
110
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Our suggestion in the paper is to define Bayesian inference at the algorithmic level. We call this the "explicit-Bayes hypothesis": the notion that the underlying algorithm explicitly uses Bayes' rule. The beauty of this hypothesis is that it's readily falsifiable even if somewhat narrow.
110
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
However, most models in cognitive science are intended at the algorithmic level and Bayesian models are routinely (mis)perceived to live at the algorithmic level. This has led to unending debates about the falsifiability of the claim that cognition is Bayesian.
120
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Because Bayesian inference is intended at the computational level, it's best to think of it as a framework rather than a hypothesis (Griffiths et al., 2012).
110
Doby Rahnev @dobyrahnev.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
What does it mean for cognition to be Bayesian? The view that cognition is Bayesian inference is often intended at Marr's computational level. In a new paper in Nat Rev Psych, @kaixue98.bsky.social and I formulate the "explicit-Bayes" hypothesis that lives at the algorithmic level. rdcu.be/ff1XA
