When ferrets 🐾 make mistakes, does the premotor cortex 🧠 know it? A new study by J. Boucher, S. Shamma and Y. Boubenec in @plosbiology.org uses functional ultrasound imaging to show that premotor cortex tracks the perceived stimulus, not the one reported by behavior. ⬇️

How do frontal #brain regions guide #DecisionMaking in the context of perceptual & non-perceptual factors? A study in ferrets reveals that activity in the brain's #PremotorCortex tracks the perceived stimulus, not the one reported by behavior @lsp-ens.bsky.social @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4tv13IZ
Ultrasound images of the gyrated ferret frontal cortex (left) and auditory cortex (right). Ultrafast ultrasound captures brain vasculature rapidly enough for functional imaging; Boucher and colleagues used this technique to show that premotor cortex hemodynamic activity tracks what the animal perceives, rather than the action it takes. To do so, they took advantage of the psychometric curve for a novel analysis, distinguishing between errors which were likely due to misperception and errors which were likely made for other reasons. Last week we kicked off our first lab meeting of the new academic year. No scientific presentation this time. Instead, we were tasked with designing experiments to answer some *truly critical* research questions.
Big seminar room, with people sitting in comfortable red seats. Three people (the organizers) are on the stage.Slide titled "Questions". The text on the slide is:
"1. Can we distinguish between real vs. fake zoom laughter?
2. Can a ferret learn to DJ?
3. Can statistical modelling predict the microwaves behaviour better than intuition?
4. Do coffee breaks transfer more knowledge than official meetings?
5. Can the cleanliness of someone's desk predict the prettiness of their figures?"
