New commentary! Are scientists and laypeople alike under persistent illusions of understanding? Shiffrin, Stigler, & Keil (2026) seem to think so. I argue this isn't the case w/ @sharonchungsl.bsky.social, Adam Harris, @davidlagnado.bsky.social & @singmann.bsky.social: rdcu.be/3swzbgH3ePva

Interested in how we plan over our imagination? Come to Brazil 🇧🇷 & my poster P1-E-37 at #CogSci2026! Here, @smfleming.bsky.social and I use computational modelling to demonstrate that planning over our imaginations, untethered from perception, relies on mental representations.

A new measure of metacognitive bias: non-confounded, reliable, directly derived from the meta-d’ model, and easy to compute using the hmetad package in R.

Metacognition ppl, check out this upgraded hmetad package for estimating metacognitive metrics (e.g., M-ratio)! ☑️More efficient ☑️Easier to implement ☑️Comprehensive documentation ☑️New non-confounded measure of metacognitive bias (meta-delta) I’ve just applied this model to my data - working nicely!

“You can’t just be confident, you have to be confident about something.” Research led by @jerlich.bsky.social and Xiaoyue Zhu set out to disentangle the different kinds of confidence by designing a perceptual gambling task for rodents. ⬇️ www.sainsburywellcome.org/web/blog/dec...
Diagram of the perceptual gambling task. Rats need to report whether a tone is lower or higher than 8KHz. On some trials a flash on the right (or left) indicates that correct responses to the side of the flash will result in a higher reward. But errors are never rewarded. Credit - Jeff Erlich.
