I was thinking this morning that we're in the nascent age of CAD (Computer Aided Design) for software. Everyone is fumbling about, using thousands of tmux terminals to build a bunch of different things, but there's no unifying concept yet of HOW to do this yet. Fun time to be building!

I find it mildly hilarious that I'm now viewing an 8GB GPU as "little". I remember when a MB of memory was considered a lot and now 8GB of dedicated memory for specific computations is *nothing*.

I have a theory that as the models get more capable, they start to prefer simpler, easier to reason about solutions. I think it has less to do with training data and more to do with good engineering. (But I could be wrong)

It's a balancing act between precision and performance. It's rare to have a model that requires the range of values available in fp32 and a lot of hardware is optimized for fp16/fp8/int8. Textual models are often fine with fp8/int8, but visual models benefit from the wider range available in fp16.
