in honor of the eclipse today, here’s a comparison of eclipses on earth and mars. we are so incredibly lucky that our moon is the right distance to completely block out the sun and give us a spectacular view.

this picture is INSANE. it was taken from the apollo 13 lunar module, and you can see the damaged service module in the background after it was jettisoned following the explosion of an oxygen tank!!
This view of the severely damaged Apollo 13 service module was photographed from the lunar module after it was jettisoned. The command module, still docked with the Lunar Module, is in the foreground. An entire panel on the service module was blown away by the apparent explosion of oxygen tank number two located in Sector 4.

60 MILLION stars in one image. this is a new image of the heart of our galaxy, the milky way, captured by the euclid telescope
A dense field of tiny stars fills this square image taken by the European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope. The lower and central areas are dominated by bright yellow and gold colours, forming a textured background similar to fine glitter or sand. Dark brown and black patches cut irregularly through the yellow regions, like ink stains or clouds of smoke. Toward the upper left, the colours shift to purple and reddish tones, blending gently into the surrounding star field. Small blue points of light are scattered across the image.A very dense field of tiny, closely packed points of light fills the image. The colour is almost uniform, dominated by bright yellow and gold tones across the entire frame. Small white points appear slightly brighter here and there, with a few faint bluish points scattered among them. No large dark patches or strong colour variations are visible, giving the image a smooth, grain like appearance.

egg nebula | hubble ✨🥚
This colourful image shows a cosmic lighthouse known as the Egg Nebula, which lies around 3000 light-years from Earth.

The Egg Nebula is a ‘preplanetary nebula’. These objects occur as a dying star’s hot remains briefly illuminates material it has expelled, lighting up the gas and dust that surrounds it.

Although the dying star is hidden behind the thick dust lane that streaks down the centre of this image, it is revealed by the four lighthouse-like beams clearly visible through the veil of dust that lies beyond the central lane.

The concentric rings seen in the less dense cloud surrounding the star are due to the star ejecting material at regular intervals – typically every hundred years – during a phase of the star’s evolution just prior to this preplanetary nebula phase.

Caption credit: ESA

image credit: NASA/ESA/Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)
acknowledgment: W. Sparks (STScI) & R. Sahai (JPL)In the image center, an opaque oval cloud of gray gas aligned from 1 o’clock to 7 o’clock hides a star. Two strong beams of light from the star emerge from large holes in both sides of the cloud, forming narrow cones extending toward 10 o’clock and 4 o’clock. The central cloud is surrounded by concentric, wispy shells of gas illuminated by the star’s light. The shells reflect extra light where they’re hit by the twin beams. A crowd of smaller stars with cross-shaped spikes over them surrounds the nebula on a black background.

WE HAVE A STUNNING NEW CLOSE UP VIEW OF THE HELIX NEBULA FROM WEBB!!! 🌌
A closeup of a small section of the Helix Nebula, an expanding shell of gas and dust. Thousands of orange and gold comet-like pillars stream upward from the bottom, like thin liquid blown up a sheet of glass. These pillars are around the circumference of the arced shell, which forms a partial orange semi-circle at the bottom. The pillars are more numerous and denser at the bottom, and darker red. They fade to orange and then yellow in the arc. In the top two-thirds, they are thinner and more golden, and it’s easier to see the black background of space. Several bright blue stars, some with diffraction spikes, are scattered throughout. A few larger stars are on the right side. "Webb" is labeled on the right in transclucent white.

This is what the band of the Milky Way would look like at night if your eyes could see radio waves. A hidden beauty. It's a new image created by the Murchison Widefield Array, which scanned the sky in 20 radio "colors" over frequencies from 72 to 231 megahertz. 🧪🔭 www.icrar.org/gleam-x-gala...
Astronomers from the International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) have created one of the largest low-frequency radio colour images of the Milky Way ever assembled. This spectacular new image captures the Southern Hemisphere view of the Galactic Plane – the disk of our Galaxy, which appears to human eyes as the glowing band of the Milky Way – now revealed across a wide range of radio wavelengths, or ‘colours’ of radio light.

An illustration of Danse Macabre, my original character and boss in a game that doesn't exist. She’s a bone-pale woman with sculpted, tentacle-like hair that frames her face, blood-red eyes and a strapless dress that appears to be part of her body, made of bones and blood and meat. Rib bones curl up from her back and around her arms. She runs her fingertips along the top of a skeleton’s skull, blood dripping down from her hand and pouring over it as cold blue light appears in its eyes and its jaw hangs open rapturously. She smirks and watches the process.

Still really love this piece — Danse is a fun character to draw, and I feel like this does a great job of encapsulating the vibe of her first phase as a boss character: elegant skeleton-summoning blood queen. It's really cool that she actually ended up becoming a character in a game, too (Drop Pockets)! Anyway, I love evil women. I love evil blood women. I don't know why. They're just good.

You pulled my true name
Under protest
But no pretense
From my chest.

I had never heard it out loud
I had never seen lips
Move to shape it

It hovered in the air
Between us
Like a swarm of gnats
Shifting and erratic

You pulled it out so
I could attach it to me
The way I always wished to

You pulled the poetry
From my head, my heart
And made me say it
And sign it with a whisper

I had never heard, in another's voice

Three crows are sitting on the moon, which has fallen to the ground.
... People knew that there was an abandoned monolith in the Wasteland. They were afraid of it and never went to those places. No one remembered where it came from. It was rumored that once this artifact was in the sky and gave light at night, but something happened and it fell to the ground. But the old people only laughed at this legend. And only the Ravens knew the truth ...
