Just rewatched the LOTR extended trilogy. Realised that the Fellowship is the best of them. Beautifully constructed and designed.

But yeah. Every day I'm reminded of how bigots, despite their political affiliation, maintain zero empathy for those they hate, from internet commenters to JK Rowling & governments. They never take a pause to check in on their bigotry, & as a leftist, I'm tired of doing the emotional labour.

I recently read a book about the "science" behind evil which teetered between many arguments which all cancelled each other out: 1. There's no such thing as evil 2. We should be empathetic to people who do "evil" things as they have mental health issues/personality disorder/had a hard life

Never take seriously those who ridicule low income people for having a smartphone or laptop. “If they’re so poor how did they buy an iPhone???” Because they’re trying to escape poverty, not the 1700s, genius. If you think basic tech access is unnecessary or a luxury, survive a month without it.

Not main point but very revealing that Laura Kuenssberg keeps on talking about the "child benefit cap" in *tax credits* (it's Universal Credit, and has been for most claimants for some time). Reflects both very poor briefing *and* her complete ignorance of the topics she asks questions about..

It’s no great stretch to understand the current popularity of cosy fiction given the state of the world. It’s making we wonder whether more high stakes books would be popular in calmer times? #cosy #books

For Control Panel Saturday: Two Analog covers by Frank Kelly Freas. The one with the ironic shoulder patch is from July 1964 and the one with the "timeline" dial is from Nov 1965.
Three soldiers all sleep while at their stations, each of which has a round screen depicting spheres hovering over a major city, alongside flashing instructions saying "Foe," "Destroy," "Status: Hot" and "Priority: AAAA1." The nearest soldier has a shoulder patch reading "Semper Vigilans."A hand reaches to flip a switch on a chunky control panel that includes a "paratime monitor" screen featuring a person with long blonde hair riding a horse while wearing ancient armor and holding a yellow pendant. Other controls include a dial labeled "timeline" that can be turned to the numbers 1 through 5, a "relevance" radar screen, a "pickup number" reader, and assorted screens and knobs.

More should have been made about Farage's absence from Parliament in the week of the summit. After all, the date was well known in advance. And next week is a holiday for the Commons anyway. This is someone who deliberately chose not to be present.

The hysterical reaction of certain commentators to today’s UK-EU agreement is something to behold. The “surrender” of using e-gates when you go on holiday. The contempt for the “will of the people” of making education abroad more accessible. Rigorous debate is good. This nonsense is a waste of time.

I still think represents the most shocking void in the UK’s COVID response - when the largest biomedical facility offered to undertake testing (many universities did the same) the government didn’t even answer. The cost would have been minimal. But no profit for private companies… is that it?

I don’t think authors realise how important their reputation is, even in small ways. Today, I encountered an incredibly rude & entitled man. I then saw him sign some books. I made the conscious effort to them avoid his book, as did the person with me. You sell your books as much as the plot does.
