I covered this last month in my Working Paper on renewables and grid stability. The press totally whiffed on their reporting on the Iberian blackout last year — here I call out the @financialtimes.com and @bloomberg.com. 🔌💡 www.planetarytech.earth/s/The-Sun-Ha... bsky.app/profile/keta...
...the Iberian grid blackout in 2025 was quickly blamed in headlines on Spain’s increasing dependence on renewable energy, in particular on solar PV. For example, The Financial Times led its initial reporting with the assertion that “The inability of Spain’s electricity grid to manage an unusually high supply of solar power was a key factor in Monday’s catastrophic blackout,” a claim attributed to “some experts”. The predilection to blame renewables for such incidents is widespread. Bloomberg's later story in August on grid stability carried a sub-headline announcing that “Countries with the most renewables have become vulnerable to outages”, and then “Solar farm outages had destabilized Spain’s grid, and there weren’t enough gas plants online to provide stability.” By late May, The FT had pivoted its reporting with the headline “Spanish grid operator faults big power plants in blackout blame game”. By June, Spanish authorities, after investigating the blackout, had determined that the event was caused by 1) either a fossil-fueled or a nuclear power plant shutting down and 2) the grid operator failing to manage the resulting fluctuations in voltage.13 In March, 2026, a final report by ENTSOE, an association of European grid operators, blamed poor planning and voltage control mechanisms and noted that renewable generation capacity could have actually reduced the severity, or even prevented, the event, but were prevented from doing so by regulations then in place. Those regulations have since been changed, enabling “renewables to contribute to voltage control” beginning in 2026.

It may well be that 1) Spain needs to invest to modernize its grid to manage a shift in electricity sources, and it may well be that 2) this investment is late in coming, and that 3) the modernization has not been optimally managed. Yet the “high supply of solar” was, factually, not a “key factor” in the blackout, and “solar farm outages” explicitly did not “destabilize Spain's grid”.
