Harmful algae blooms might not just cause harm in the water. Researchers are working to understand how the toxins produced in these blooms can become airborne and impact people’s health - something boaters and anglers around Lake Erie call "August cough" www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

NSF's grantmaking is miserly when compared to recent years, but when compared it to the historical record, we see it's a radical break from the long-term consensus of investing in scientific innovation. grant-witness.us/posts/2026-0... #NSF 🧪

How does changing mountain hydrology (shrinking snowpacks and earlier snowmelt) affect silicate rock weathering and stream chemistry? Check out our work: doi.org/10.1002/hyp.... #SilicateWeathering #Snowpack #WaterQuality #Catchments #WaterQualityModeling
Graphical abstract describes the findings of our study. Two images of the Sagehen catchment show the comparison between the hydrology and geochemistry in the driest and wettest years. In the driest year, there is less snowpack, lower streamflow, less flow through the shallow subsurface compared with the deeper subsurface. Bar charts show that in the drier year, the rock weathering rates were about half those in wetter years, and export is about one third. The text reads: "In drier, lower-snow years, silicate weathering rates are lower, geogenic solute export is lower, but stream solute concentrations are higher."

Big CONGRATS to @kacizarek.bsky.social!!! Her new paper is out in @agu.org's JGR-B! The paper has a little bit of everything -- N biogeochemistry, intermittent stream hydrology, concentration-connectivity relationships! Check it out here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Conceptual figure illustrating predicted biogeochemical responses to changes in network connectivity and streamflow. (a) At the watershed outlet, we predicted NO3− export would increase in response to increasing watershed‐scale connectivity and streamflow, resulting in an enrichment of NO3− downstream. As watershed‐scale connectivity (active surface drainage network length) and streamflow decrease in the dry‐down, NO3− export will decrease due to N source limitations. (b) Throughout the watershed, we predicted the seasonal dry‐down period to be the greatest potential for denitrification to occur given the availability of both NO3− and dissolved organic carbon, anoxic conditions, and decreased streamflow.
