Prospective student sends genAI enquiry; I reply asking to see brief, non-genAI proposal; student sends terrible, nonsensical genAI proposal; I decline and state that it looks like genAI and makes no sense; student angrily refutes with genAI explanation. All in about 25 minutes. Rinse & repeat 😭😭😭

This comparison of the relative volume of media attention experienced by Jason Arday and James Orr is striking. One thing worth adding to @samanthaasumadu.substack.com's excellent analysis below is that Orr is also under investigation for bullying a student: www.theguardian.com/education/20...

“You have to be twice as good to get half as far. Everybody in the Black community knows this.” Powerful words from our member Andrew as he spoke at TUC Congress on the death of our member, colleague and friend Professor Jason Arday. Congress then joined us in a minute’s silence in Jason’s memory.

May Jason Arday find the peace the racist white media never gave him. RIP.
The White-owned, mainstream media published 249 articles in 22 days on Jason Arday, according to data from NewsCord, a UK media watchdog.

By comparison, in 2024, in the weeks after the then newly released Epstein files showed long-standing ties between Epstein and Peter Mandelson, former UK Ambassador to the U.S., the UK media mentioned Mandelson 119 times, NewsCord found.

In 2023, only the Financial Times covered extensively that William O’Reilly, a White Cambridge professor, was found guilty of plagiarism. All told, a Black Cambridge professor endured 249 times more media coverage for an accusation of plagiarism by a known racist propagandist than a White Cambridge professor found guilty of plagiarism.

Cambridge is a cruel institution. It will use you up and spit you out. This would never happen to a white Oxbridge-educated man subjected to these accusations; those people do not make the news, nor do they lose their positions, because the university sees them as one of its own.

For what it's worth this is my full quote. I would love to understand from @ukri.org why this call has been restricted to 4 weeks (with no advanced warning) going against it's own EDI commitments. The response so far doesn't explain why only 4 weeks nor why not 8 weeks.
It would be good to understand why the community have only been given 4 weeks to respond to this major call. It is ironic that the call states that “as a leader in the community, the lab will be expected to embed EDI in all their activities throughout the lifetime of the investment” when the call itself breaks EPSRC’s own EDI commitment to funding opportunities to be open for a minimum of 8 weeks.
We understand the desire to create momentum and capitalise on the UK’s strengths in AI research. But we need to ensure the pace helps rather than hinders great outcomes for the UK.
When timelines are excessively compressed, it is impossible for individuals and organisations to develop their strongest ideas or most effective consortia. When the process is rushed, people lose trust in it because the timeline just doesn’t allow for well-developed proposals.
For a £40 million investment, the stakes are particularly high. Even with a stage-gate in place, the initial rapid turnaround narrows the field prematurely. This not only limits who is able to participate meaningfully but also stifles innovation and favours established paradigms. As a result, cutting edge emerging thinking is effectively locked out.
By allowing slightly more time at the outset, EPRSC could enable a broader, more diverse range of applicants to contribute which would strengthen the quality and long term impact of the investment.
