This will be a long thread on yesterday police massacre in Rio. In nothern Rio de Janeiro city, there is a couple of hills called Complexo da Penha. It's Comando Vermelho("Red Command", a drug gang), or CV, territory. CV is the greatest gang in Rio, second in the whole Brazil. +

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.

As we begin the transition to a new Trump presidency I urge us to avoid framing Trump’s behavior in individual psychological terms (i.e. as mental instability) and instead frame the issue structurally as a product of growing up as a rich white male in a white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.

A few important fact to remember: S. Korea lived under some form of military dictatorship from 1965-1988! Brazil lived under a military dictatorship from 1964-1985! Democracy is not an abstraction to these folk, it's a vulnerable thing that they want to protect.
